  1. At this stage, it's more like no matter how hard I push down, the car will not stop in an emergency setting. It will slow but not stop. I'm not Schwarzenegger, but I've never faced that issue before with other Classics. I enjoy how raw the car is compared to others I've driven - I just want to make sure someone with experience and a keen pairs of eyes examines the car in depth first, as I continue to familiarize myself with it. Are Moordale motors well reputed? Outside of the 2 main issues above, I have a few dash lights that won't come on (including the Hazard lights during breakdown!), a speedometer gauge that thinks it is in a discotheque, and oil that is on the rocker cover and by the rear of the motor, just under the cover gasket. I have no idea how old the tyres are but if can't determine that they're < 7 years old, I'll replace them and then get the car tracked. Is there a go-to tyre for these cars? (Example a 195/ 70 R14 Michelin for a Classic Mercedes)
  2. Thanks for the advice! I’d really like to give the car a thorough examination as I’m not the most handy with tools just yet. I’m based in Rotherhithe, London but will travel a reasonable distance for a keen honest eye, especially for these safety items. I too want the very best parts for the car!
  3. I made it back home! The AA man showed up an hour after I ran out of petrol (scary when doing 70mph on the motorway). 30 minutes and a few elongated starter pulls later I was back doing 70 but not before the AA man said he wished all his recoveries were as simple. The drive home left me with several impressions and questions. I've started a new thread here and would really value your inputs. Many thanks in advance!
  4. First off, a genuine thanks to so many who made me feel so welcome on these forums. I've owned a few Classics but no other community has been as welcoming. I'll do my best to pay it forward. I was able to reach home safely, as predicted by some. The GT6 drove reasonably well and that "sound" is simply intoxicating. I love the way this car looks and can't stop ogling at it. Sadly, not everything was rosy and I came away with 3 primary questions/ concerns: 1) I'm going to need a specialist- an honest one with a reputation for extreme attention to detail/ originality. I'll need them to help me sort a few issues out. Most are minor but the two below are worrying. Any recommendations? 2) Steering wheel shudder/ lateral shaking when going over minor raised road imperfections like lane reflectors. It felt as if the tie rods had come lose or were missing. 3) Probably the worst braking I've ever experienced in a vehicle. Hard pressing of pedal only mildly slowed the GT6 down. I would not be able to stop the car in an emergency, even with full force. Is there a best practice to address this? I'll be sure to keep this thread updated with pictures, and updates over time. Please chime in!
  5. Spoke too soon. Car started sputtering forcing me to pull over on the M40 between junction 15 and 16. I smelt fuel, lost power and now the car will start but won’t run. I suspect I am out of fuel. AA on the way and I hope to be back on my way soon. Or this may end up being a late night.
  6. Big Michelin fan! Are they available in the correct size? half way through my trip back home! What an animal this car is!! More soon
  7. Actually, the GT6 is a bit of a dimensional upgrade from our current vehicle, which I am forced to sell. https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1285742 I wondered if the replacement frequency for the Rotoflex couplings was linked to years since install or miles driven. The car has only driven ~10K miles on the replacement couplings but service records indicate they were replaced over a decade ago.
  8. Reassuring to hear I must admit. I suppose I wasn’t sure if some of the performance modifications improved or worsened city driveability (fast road CAM, SU HS6 Carbs)? I suppose I’ll find out later today!
  9. Many thanks both - Looks like I'll be taking the M62 -> M6 -> M1 down. If I run into trouble, I'll be sure to post here tomorrow evening.
  10. Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Very kind of you to share them! I've agreed the deal with the owner, Andrew, and will be picking the car up tomorrow. Andy, the owner, was kind enough to give it a drive today to make sure all worked well. Wish me luck! Looking forward to contributing and learning on these forums in the years ahead!
  11. Very useful information and yes, the owner has had it for < 2 years. Meeting up with him and the car at Liverpool and driving it back. I'd appreciate all the information on the car I can get, so thank you very much!
  12. Sorry, should have shared that the car is in Belfast, Northern Ireland, so the MOT history wouldn't be available as is the norm here.
  13. I have AA with recovery and home start (not the best boost of confidence hearing that I should have it 😜). I don't have a club approved valuation but the seller does have an Admiral's insurance valuation, which is a reasonable indicator. The seller states that there are no leaks and the car runs well, and sounds genuine. The work detailed above indicates that the car was loved but I'm entirely unaware if the performance modifications improve or hurt reliability. Any thoughts?
  14. Hello all, Potential new owner here. The seller and I have just agreed a deal for this GT6 and I pick it up a day from now. I was hoping for your thoughts on this MK2, as I am new to this model's ownership but own other Classics: 1) The car looks original with the exception of perhaps the sunroof and the front bumpers. Were these factory options? 2) As you can see from the work carried out, looks like it's been modified a bit for performance. I have no way to guess what kind of power it must be generating now or the modifications are tasteful or a bit aggressive. 3) Car seems rust free from the images and I will be inspecting it with a powerful flashlight. Any tips on where I should look? 4) I'll be driving it down from Liverpool, a good 4 hour nighttime trip. Other than a prayer book, anything I should carry with me or check before departing? Many thanks in advance!
