NevSpit
Hello all. A friend is clearing out his garage and given me this can of oil. Two questions please: It looks pretty old, is it safe to use or would it have gone ‘off’ by now? Can I presume it is GL4 as there are no other markings on it. Thanks! Pete Lewis
would think its fine and well aged before GL5 became available Pete
GrahamB
I have some very old EP gear oil. I use it to oil the trunnions but use more recently purchased oil in the gearbox and diff.
Unkel Kunkel
Not sure. A vintage container, I think. We hear some components of oil degrade with time. Against that, many vehicles run happily for decades with the oil that went into the gearbox or diff. at the factory and there are probably also other factors depending on how it was stored - whether or unopened / contaminated/ condensation etc, etc. It may well be absolutely fine, but even a tiny doubt would put me off because the ‘Oil is cheaper than Repairs’ mantra would spring to mind and unsettle me. I'd agree... even though being tighter than a duck's whatever would make me wince at the waste, but I'd treat it as degraded and use good modern oil for components. Still good for trunnions and rustproofing, though.
NevSpit
Thanks all appreciated. In that case I reckon I’ve got a lifetime supply for my trunnions 😁
johny
Empty tin might be worth something and then that can pay for new oil🤗
