SpitfireGeorge
Hi Guys, Just starting to rebuild my Spitfire Mk3 engine. What size is the massive nut at the end of the crankshaft pulley, it looks about 1 1/2 inch AF? I don't want to buy random sockets as this size are not cheap. Thanks, Brett
Anglefire
I think its 1 13/16" or 46mm - I can check later
NonMember
I have a feeling the 1 13/16" is the 1500 spec (possibly Mk4 too?) and the Mk3 small bearing engine uses a smaller one. Unfortunately my Mk3 now has a 1500 fitted so I don't have an original to measure up.
Anglefire
Ah, yes I missed that vital piece of information
KevinR
I believe it is 1, 7/16” but may be 1,5/16”. I’m away from home so I can’t check.
Ben Caswell
Just measure it across the flats for"AF" size socket !!
Mad4classics
It's 1 7/16 AF, bought a large open ended spanner to fit. David
NonMember
I wouldn't advise the use of an open-ended spanner on a crank pulley nut. They really are only good for low torque use. Ring spanner at minimum, proper socket is best. Unless, of course, your only reason for it is to turn the engine over.

Brett, If you are rebuilding the engine then you will need to torque the crank nut correctly and as Rob has alluded too, you will need a socket to do that properly. Regards. Richard. That,s exactly so, it's hard to get a socket on it with the radiator and horns in the way . Just quoting the size. You'd need a socket to torque it up.
