Boot lid handle

I am trying to refit the boot handle to a new boot lid on my Mk 1 Spitfire.  However the square rod attached to the handle which should turn the latch does not reach the latch. I would say that is at least 1/2" short of where it should be which to my way of thinking should level with or just proud of the inside of the latchplate.  Any ideas please?  Also should there be a circlip to hold the handle assembly to the escutcheon ?

The handle simply passes through the escutcheon (no clip) then through the boot lid then through the catch, the thread should protrude enough for a nyloc nut. That is how it is on my mk2 

there is of course a small gasket between escutcheon and boot

i said that as repairing one last month it had a sprag type washer to hold it all in place

orig or from where    ...no idea 

if its original fit why is it too  short  now?  , is the latch fitted position got some problem .. or the handle is not far enough through the escutcheon ?

Thanks for that but it's the original handle and escutcheon.  There is no circlip shown on the Rimmerbros diagram which is why I was asking.  The rod has a threaded end to take a locknut.

Thank you all for your comments..  I figured that it should be as Danmi says.  It isn't locked and is as far through the escutcheon as it is possible to go.  To make it even more confusing I have now fitted the hinges and put the lid in place as I was beginning to think that I had a dodgy lid, but it latches just fine.  However with the escutcheon in place the square section just does not reach the latch.  As I say it's at least 1/2 inch short.  I think I'm going bonkers !

IMG_2418.thumb.JPG.97df3bb886f8d55c5a14be7b70978e27.JPGAs you can see the profile of this lid is different from the one shown above.  Where the lock is mounted it goes straight across whereas it should be indented which accounts for the fact that the operating rod is too short to go all the way through.  O well, it's too late to return it now !  Strangely though, as I said earlier it latches perfectly well where it is ?  Anyway I've taken it to Metal Mickey the local fabricator who is going to extend the rod by 30 mm which should do the trick.  Thank you all for taking the time to help me, I shall keep taking my tea at normal strength and, O sorry about the 43 quid Colin but I'm sure you need all the bits!

No Pete,  this is the first time they have met.  As I said at the beginning it's a new lid but the original handle.  Perhaps I used the wrong terminology when I said " refit ".  Should have just said " fit ".  If you wondering why I am asking for help with a simple thing like this it's because this car has been mothballed for several years due to lack of workspace until we moved here recently. Although I stripped it down myself and made loads of notes about various things ones memory tends to fade as the years go by.  Anyway I'm approaching the completion of a body off rebuild now but I'm sure there will be more questions in the coming weeks.

We're not, it's what we all do, for exactly the same reasons.... :)

Hello boys,  okay so I used a little linguistic licence with the word "several".  I bought the car in 1969 and drove it for 30 years.  I was made redundant in 1998 and decided, then, as I had time on my hands ( after redecorating the house from top to  bottom as you must ) that I would strip Lyzzie down and rebuild her. Went back to a new job in '99 and didn't have any time to spare for the next 13 years apart from the fact the I really did not have the space.  We moved here two years ago after I retired and I now have the time and space.  Thought you might like to see these from 1969. Still have the same girl too !!
