Captain
I'm considering having my mk3 GT6 2ltr engine professionally re-manufactured. I've had a couple of quotes from Ivor Searl and another engineers both around the £2k mark. I was wondering if anyone has had this type of work done to their engines and can offer their thoughts on the subject? Also has anyone ever used Ivor Searl themselves or recommend any other re-manufacturer?
Pete Lewis
All club sold /remanufactured engines are done by ivor searle I have been there for a factory tour and its exceptionally clean controlled well inspected, and all specifications are adhered to and all work is logged as the build progresses hard to upstage pete
KevinR
Ivor Searle are as good as they come. The Club use them for their reconditioned engines - contact Garth in the Club shop for more details.
dougbgt6
I've had my mk3 engine re-bored twice, crank reground once, replaced once. (20 years apart, long story, 1st time P.O. had wreaked the engine towing a boat, 2nd time ex-wife did notice the red warning light and lose of oil!) ANYWAY, 2k sounds like a good price. I'd go through the club shop.
Clive
But remember these engines are nothing special or complicated. I see you are on the sunny IOM, so transport on/off the island is often problematical. I would expect there to be a decent machine shop on the island. After all, a rebore and crank grind are everyday jobs that should (I use the word should advisedly) be straightforward, and bolting it together easy enough. Have a ask on the island, there may be somewhere popular with the locals?
JohnD
What symptoms or signs make you think it needs to be rebuilt? And if it does, DiY is so much more satisfying, and you can put a "Built, not Bought" sticker on the back! John
