Don't get me wrong - lead in fuel was harmful to the environment and bad for you - but to suggest that "these industrialists were secretly deliberately poisoning everyone just for profit" is utter conspiracy theorist tosh of the first degree. I haven't used leaded since around that time. As for the 3rd world being 'forced' to use it, I reckon the emissions from many of the unmaintained, unserviced and unroadworthy cars there would gas more people than the lead in the petrol.
