Need a good aerial!

My Herald is drilled and plugged for a radio aerial so I'm going to fit a nice telescopic version in place of the nasty rubber grommet, but can't find a good one. My Gt6 had a very nice version where the chrome cover was large enough to completely cover the whole of the plastic base. All I can find today are versions where the chrome 'cap' is very small, and reveals too much plastic below - see photo of the one I had for the TR7. Anyone know of a quality aerial that's more chrome than plastic? It's not for the radio, just to cover the hole and look shiny.

These are the people I bought one from for my 13/60.

There has to be a non chrome cap area to allow the unit to be angled to suit the car panel.

I fitted one to replace the one on the car when I got it as it didn't retract fully any more, I don't use the radio.

I even came across a couple of young folk trying to figure out what it was (it was retracted) I had to explain it was the arial.

True, but some of the modern versions are miniscule - hence I need one that's as big as can be fitted / bought... whichever! I know almost flat versions are available, or very slightly angled, but I've spent a time trawling custom car and other classic sites to no avail so far.

If you don't need the aerial why not use a chrome tap hole stopper, used one on my Vitesse as aerial was leaking water into boot and no radio fitted so not needed.

Paul.

How about an electric one? :) For some reason the physical bits seem better quality than the hand erection jobs.

Doug, you are a star and a Prince among Posters. I had one with the GT6, sold it with that car, and it's the one I referred to earlier. A lovely version that was never actually wired in due to the length of the cables needed from the dash to the rear wing. But something was niggling at me.... so off to the garage and discovered that I had a second identical one stored away. It's covered in dust and still priced £16... The chrome bezel is nice and deep, but the overall length - 12 inches from mount to base of motor - might mean that it sticks down below the bottom of the dashboard. I may be able to fit the other telescopic but pinch the deeper bezel for looks. Much obliged for prodding the memory!

Saw those on a Mini site recently, but whilst they're miles better looking than the rubber grommet I think I'll use an aerial and pretend I have a working radio.
