Spitfire underside protection

As some will know, im doing a rolling resto in my Spit 1500.

But do want some good protection underneath.

Ive painted a part with zink phosphate and stone chip (light coat) over it.

But do have again some light rust spots 🙄

And it would best that I strip the whole floors.

I've worked on a Porsche 911 last year, stripped the underseal, original paint + coating off to bare metal.

Then rust convertor on the hard spots, epoxy primer and a good layer of stone chip (but with compressed air gun, so I can spray a thicker layer).

Been thinking of painting it in 2k body color.. but thats for later.

So what have people done ?

Also needs to be good against stone chips and salt.

Underseal I dont like..

Yachting enamel. Did that on my first spitfire and it was near to the orignal body colour. 16 years and it was not chipped and still looked good ,used in all weathers! I was recommended it by a club member back in 92! They said go to a certain shop in watford to ask for it as they asked them and the look of disappointment on the salesmans face when told it was for a car instead of a boat! It was a two part paint system with a primer and top coat, with a time scale to paint between. Sorry can't remember the make.

If it was Blakes, then I used that on my boat and it did a brilliant job.  Years later I came back to using the same on my Citroen. The company had changed names to Hempel and the product had been subject to health and safety ..and was relatively speaking.. crax.  I'll not use it again.

  • 2 weeks later...

Been thinking to do it like this:

-strip as much as i can from the underside

-apply decent rust convertor on the rusty area's that I cant fully clean with a wire brush etc.

-apply epoxy primer

-then U-pol gravitex

And then we can see what we do of color....

That sounds a decent plan.
