  1. youre welcome just dont buy a Payen head gasket just what makes you thing it needs a head off ???? pete
  2. with the head of the jet level to the bridge i would drop the jet 3 turns as a basic starting point when running and well hot then adjust the jet up or down in small movements to give the best idle then reduce the idle to around 700-800 and fine adjust again . to balance loosen the connecting rod clamp, back the idle screw of and turn to just touch the casting, turn in 1.5 turns and retighten the connecting clamp .after mixture setting adjust both screws to get a fair idle . there is no dark art here . do make sure the jets return fully after choke is used . Pete
  3. Danny not scare mongering but .. if you search on the net the payen problems apply yo spitfire cross the range to stags so i would shop elseware Pete
  4. thats good readings there is only one quoted by triumph thats 40-60 at 2500rpm ( thats from memory not the book ) if you do need to have the head looked you know where i am Pete
  5. ever tried driving in wellington boots .. its ..impossible Pete
  6. think thats down to the (Alan) member involved in this nightmare. Payen stop production around 2019 due to tooling worn out , got bought out by belgium co and tooling revamped , now under german ownership, internet has all the story but payen is not the same as the one that managed a good reputation a most frustrating repair where you start to question your own experience /ability with a waste of time and money and alan paid rimmers a premium to get the payen as he felt they were worth it how wrong can you be , a classis case of being clever after the event but who goes searching gasket problems happy new year Pete
  7. the stand off is about the same (not measured) the depth to locate in the recess seems about the same its the fact the payen rings only cover the recess there is no real clamp on the periphery of the narrow ring Canley ( well done ) and Chris Witor say they only sell good gasket there is no brand on the canley packaging if you search the net payen and its name seem to have lost it badly and if main suppliers are selling old branded gaskets ( ie rimmers) then there will be a lot of heartache for those that are on a wild goose chase
  8. even dancing was a challenge in platforms Pete
  9. try wearing stilettos great space savers by the way Ive not tried them Pete
  10. if you have a dremmel type tool with a small cutting wheel you can grind out a better clean square cut groove if its got worn and lost its defined sharp edge Pete
  11. right Today head off fitted the canley supplied gasket , retorqued , tappet reset, timed, and she runs fine compare old gasket and the canley gasket with the Payen from Rimmers and the problem is evident the payen gasket Fire rings are half the width required to seal against the clamping load of the head so this confirms the Triumph Payen Gasket is not fit for purpose , any purpose . the pic shows the wildly differing half the width rings there's a lesson for us all here Pete
  12. cheapest up grade to pedal loads is to weld a bigger pedal pad on . Pete
  13. sometimes the simplest is the best a small bulb on the trigger line will wink just the same as with points might be worth checking you get 4 pulses per rev.of the rotor I am currently playing with one only doing 3 out of the 6 so thats gone back to points for now. sorry but i find they look the part but just seem unreliable and i find aldon and lumenition just battle on for ever pete
  14. the mix and not match these lamp holders has caused loads of grief when earthed .claw earthed, single and twin filaments holders all get mixed up over the years I have spent many a happy minute or two sorting out these when you get all the right terminals but not in the right order (who said that ) pete
  15. yes Nigel theres lots of negative comments on the 'net' about payen so replacement is coming from Canley's head comes off this week end i hear the ideas its maybe something else but ....what there is little to go wrong with what was a running engine having a gasket swap and a light valve/chamber clean up its got me stumped and thats unusual the only common thing is the gasket if i fitted the head with chocolate spread i would expect better results and ive said the pistons are going up,down ok , you can feel a light puff from the plug hole but not enough to make it work Pete
  16. you could araldite the bolt heads just holds enough to allow the nuts tight without the heads spinning you could drill the bolt head and insert a split pin just need to stop the head rotating many ways are available with a bit of thinking you can leave the metalastic mount and remove the chassis base plate as an assy. or hope you can lift the od over the mount leaving the sodding nuts alone Pete
  17. if it doesnt align with the pick up it seems to need some sort of spacer time to talk to accuspark Pete
  18. Hi John , apart from all pistons go up and down antics of low cranking needed replacement starter fuel wont prime sparks leaping out the coil head accuspark only tiggering 3 of the 6 screw missing from rocker /pedestal location none of which has anything to do with zero compression all the rockers rock will check valve timing but she ran on 5/6 before we took the head off and there was little work required to clean that up it makes no sense , the gasket is the common denominator ...or its Me and there are online reports of payen giving troubles from spitfire to stag across the whole car range since production left the UK watch this space Pete
  19. just two bolts into the OD rear cover it pays to remove the mount from its support plate so you dont get caught up and they can be pig as access to the heads is restricted Pete
  20. before he went flying down the road at mack2 he had a MGB the 1600 was pretty hairy and he was pulling ton + down barton cutting ive not had any contact since but shes still out there pete
  21. i would not expect a loose fitting trigger to mess up the running more like the module is playing up whilst i mainly see cars with a problem im afraid i see accuS as often the culprit with erratic running . im sure there are many running fine a bit of tape to make a better fit is not an unusual fix even for the rotor arm Pete
  22. thats hard to come to terms with Pete
  23. i was always going to blank off the stalk movement to sides only but sold her before that materialised . the new owner complained the indicators didnt work , well he was using the lamp stalk (you cant help some guys) Pete
  24. well its not removed yet to see if the rings are running ring round us and there aint no babies but have seen the adverts for erectile that last up to 36 hours ...What !!!!! Pete
