  3. dave this is just a way to see if the dipstick marks bore any resemblance to the sump specified capacity having seen many a wrong dipstick over the years on many variety of engines when we got the Vit6 the stick would give you an extra 2 litres to the full mark ....hopelessly wrong and sump on 1600 and 2 ltr mk1 is the same , Pete

  5. if you keep the battery on a cheap trickle charger (aldi/lidl) and fire it up once in a blue moon all classics are fine when over wintering th PI is self priming so evaporation from open carbs is not a factor Pete
  6. John they are a very revy unstressed engine MK1 has much of the same except the bore and carbs Mine would give a 2ltr a good run for the money (and surprise a few moderns ha !) Pete
  7. use an bin liner or old net curtain over the foam helps the white knuckle ride to get the covers over the foam and use cable ties rather than those awful hog rings cant be seen and far easier to tension up as you go any odd wrinkles can be steamed out with a bit of pipe as a wand in the wallpaper stripper Pete
  8. you can if you modify the tube run either with some copper plumbing or use a rubber hose pete
  9. its on most 1600 's vitesse6 item 64 1600 Engine : Canley Classics Pete

  12. Doug you wouldnt fit in the dickie seat Pete
  13. the Vit6 has a open vented tubular crankcase vent in its fitting face to the block is a pack of perforated gauze plates its worth removing the two bolts ( down near the fuel pump) and clean the plates in case they are clogged the vent is a long bit of 1" metal pipe exits below the sump flange Pete
  14. we there you go a quick Italian Tune up has solved the smoke and relief to the wallet . next time you do an oil change check whats on the dip stick add 3.5 ltrs should give you the low oil level mark, add the last 1 ltr should give you the full mark on my Vit6 the dipstick was miles out and overfilled by 2 ltrs if you used the high mark "wot you mean" it holds 6 Ltrs so a refill of 4.5 ltrs shoud not be less than the full line on the stick Pleased you have him sorted time to go for a burn up then on the growling if he had ingested a load of oil or contaminated fuel that can make em Growl a bit next time smell the smoke oil smells of oil antifreeze smells of ....antifreeze Ha ! gives a good clue where the headache is coming from Pete
  15. Ha if you read my troubles with a payen HG we managed equal all at zero across the block !!!!! pop the filler cap off if its as john says your in for maybe a gasket change if its more of e steam train then expect deep rooted wear in the piston area def have alook at the rocker cover for a blocked gauze at the breather outlet do the cheap fix first Pete
  16. they are on the net i got one and never used it so its avilable for a beer or two pretty heavy and you need good height with jack ,cradle and diff all mounted Pete
  17. did the smoking appear suddenly of its crept up from good to bad over time ?? always do this test with all plugs out and throttles held open one silly way to get smoke is overfilled dashpots the overspill runs down gets in the mixture and then fumes out the exhaust also blocked breather systems there can be a gauze in the rocker cover vent that gets clogged need to dig it out for a wash up Pete
  18. the od makes the gbox quite a weight but single handed is ok no crane . just dont drop it on your foot Pete
  19. youre welcome just dont buy a Payen head gasket just what makes you thing it needs a head off ???? pete
  20. with the head of the jet level to the bridge i would drop the jet 3 turns as a basic starting point when running and well hot then adjust the jet up or down in small movements to give the best idle then reduce the idle to around 700-800 and fine adjust again . to balance loosen the connecting rod clamp, back the idle screw of and turn to just touch the casting, turn in 1.5 turns and retighten the connecting clamp .after mixture setting adjust both screws to get a fair idle . there is no dark art here . do make sure the jets return fully after choke is used . Pete
  21. Danny not scare mongering but .. if you search on the net the payen problems apply yo spitfire cross the range to stags so i would shop elseware Pete
