has the car stood for ages rings can get gummed up with lack of use . often a good dose of redex in the plug hole and left for a few days can make a cheap improvement but will make clouds of smoke when you restart it Pete

its also worth checking no filter gaskets are obstructing the front face ports of the carbs there should be inside the rocker cover a metal gauze needs the retainer prizing open to extract it and wash in petrol a check of the diaphragm is worthwhile if its wrinkled a wash in petrol will revert it to size the diaphragm has location lugs to correctly position the air piston when was the filter last changed ??? as for mixture from level with the jet housing 3 turns down is a good start setting tight valve clearances do have a big effect on idle quality

A point of clarification on washers ?
Pete Lewis replied to Aristotle's topic in Drivetrain & Rear Axle
cant look right now but grey matter suggests the 1500 had one extra rubber spacer under one of the fwd mounts knowone has any idea why you would pitch the front frame as the rear mounts are fixed . it was introduced on later spits but never seen on herald vitesse GT6 Pete -
look at steve's online manuals Triumph Car Service manuals - Vitessesteve at least your shoes had the trailing one the right way up many are wrong the unused handbrake lever slot must be at the bottom of the trailing shoe Pete

a question where on earth did the cupfull of water come from to get in the sump it /doubt wont be condensation light staining a rub with an oily rag .......you need to see the state of cranks left outside to normalise i nice big magnet taped to the oil filter always seems agood idea Pete

it seems you need to fully bleed the slave . firstly the bleed nipple must be on the top of the feed pipe to expell all the air trapped you need to remove the slave and push the piston in as far as it will go rebleed , then a few pedal strokes to reposition the piston once the slave is refitted have a bleed tube held up high above the slaves height to ensure bubbles go upwards. moving the cylinder fixed point is never going to work as the piston can sit anywhere in the cyllinder so it compensates for disc wear .moving the cyl does not reposition the piston pete

but start with the idle screw , if that makes an easy test . once you get it hot and she idles you can adjust the mixture , if you take a look at the diaphragm if its wrinkled and wont go back nicely wash it in petrol it will resume its correct shape Pete

Lucas 23634A Alternator Early Spitfire MKIV
Pete Lewis replied to Nigel MK1V's topic in Parts Wanted
any lucas acr type will fit as a swap, if the case is handed you can rotate the halves to get the correct lug handing always make sure the split tube in the rear lug is midpositioned to allow for expansion or you break the lug off quite quickly most will have 2 x 30amp blades and one 17 amp to power the warning lamp ...quite normal Pete -
driving with the tunnel off will frighten the Pooh out of many with all the whirring clacking clicking thats hidden by the tunnel Pete

remember its a tv program made not to be questioned , worrying that some simple facts are easily obtained from any club or supplier but they dont do any homework . same as any film with steam loco's involved where they intermix all the lner.lms gwr southern all on on trip on the footage detectives they questioned why so many old prewar cars had only one headlamp working i remember that was common on dip of the day . guess we should be pleased its not Russian TV well the suns out for a change Pete

bit like the millennium clock ....nothing happened in 20 years of triumphing i have never experienced stale fuel ,or dissolving carbs, but have found crap hoses on many to be the only culprit as we have seen for some years on this forum . just to add the pump hoses on my 2000 are as far as i can see are original and perfectly sound built to a specification designed by triumph . most of the fleabay and local factors hose is a chinese fake rubbish . the club shop do sell gates barricade as do many others use that never the unbranded Ooo it got R9 printed on it ...its just going to give you the dreaded rubber slivers Pete

what happened to sawdust and banana skins as a arthur daley motors fix ??? didnt the tooth profile change on later gearboxes mix that and you get a howler Pete

if you bend the lugs a bit to remove the bezel once refitted ie fit the lugs through the slots in the case and turn it a bit you can reform the bezel with gentle use on a small vice to crimp it up tight the seals are just rubber section dont go buying some are sold at stupid prices some sell a length and you cut to suit i said oil with aid of a cocktail stick Pete
-
some headlamps will not be legal with LED bulbs need to do some homework on this subject . relays can go anywhere the harness will allow . you use relays to improve the voltage drop of the old wiring and reduce the current at the switches. led use much lower current and dont need relays as such , but you do need to be clear on fitting to your current lenses is ok , this was discussed a while back , both bulb types will fit but led can add complications and MOT problems later Pete

the needle spindle sits in jewel bearings after many years they need a spot of lubrication you can remove the drive head once you remove the chrome bezel , this may need the lugs prising open as the glass rubber rings turn into a awful gooey mess two screws on the back and the guts lift out a dab of light oil on a cocktail stick normally sorts out a stiff needle do not remove the needle . a spot of oil on the input spindle is worthwhile pete

ARP cylinder head studs for GT6 ( or regular ones from Canleys)
Pete Lewis replied to Mack's topic in Engine
the torque figure will be for a dry stud if its oiled you may strip at the suggested torque its unusual for mk2 nuts /studs to give any problems . your wrench is set in lbft not Nm ???? Pete
