  1. and as a youngster with less experience than the later years i removed the whole diff in the dark  a torch

in the cold ,ended up with a boing as the spring came up and hit the floor, dropped the diff to find all i needed was to remove the short shaft hsg,   well you learn as you develop.     have no recollection of how i got the spring back

all done on jacks and blocks . yikes !!!

i was a lot quicker at extricating in those days   ha !

  2. red wires are side lights  they must go to the side lamp bulbs

these are twin filament stop/tail  and must have a claw holder with offset bayonet pins and two contacts

some claw need./have an earth wire  some rely on the claw earthing via the lamp housing being earthed

as said these all get mixed up and you get the results you are seeing

so single contact and single bulb are indicator and reverse lamps  21w each

offset pin twin contact claw holder is stop/ tail 5w +21w

  3. it is unusual ti find the dreaded rubber slivers in the filter they are made when fitting hose to the metal pipework at the carb zone  so they float about and end up jammed in the back of the float needle valve out of sight

crafty little sods  ,  breed like rabbits the more you mess the more you make .

they wont be in the chamber   but lodged in the supply line might pay to remove the float valve and clean all .

  4. yes joining all like colours to each other is correct and dump the black earth

rear lamp problems with badly mixed claw holders with the mix of earthed claw /separate earth  single and twin filament bulbs and holders are often   a complete   mix up on Gt6 and Spitty

  5. do check the short fuel hose from the top of the tank is secure and not gone hard degraded

this when in trouble just allows the pump to suck air  and wont show as a fuel leak but seriously affects the pumps  ability to supply any demand for fuel

  6. a hot engine does spin over better and yes can give a better result than a cold one but often the compression fault

determines where it runs or not  to get it heated ,  what you are looking for it the range of results being around within 5% or each other

  7. as she ran fine a while ago it wont be anything to do with is the timing correct or have the mixtures and idle setting changed    all complete bum steers t,hey dont change by themselves

this will be more like the dreaded rubber slivers or some other fuel supply to the carbs

i would check the back of the float needle valves

using the choke is just enriching things as  the starter valve picks up direct from the float chamber

thats with CDS with one choke starter on the front carb

if they are the older thames barrier design thats not the same they just raise the needle and block the throat .

do check the diaphragms are ok , correctly locate the lugs on refit .

  8. if its a mechanical pump i have never heard or needed to isolate any pump

you just need a good battery state   all spark plugs out   fit the gauge , open the throttles

and crank over  to get  the highest reading

    and the jobs done

where does the fuel pump idea come from ...who's instructions ????

  9. at least the shoes were fitted the right way round ....that makes a change

    hand brake adjustment

disconnect the cable from the wheel cyl lever, dont let the axle "hang"on full droop

fully lock the adjuster up hard , now connect the cable to a neat fit, no tension.no slack

de adjust the 4 clicks  (one full turn )  all should be fine

there is a wear  that upset cylinder slide thats a wear groove in the back plate caused by the handbrake lever pivot

the angle of the compensator is important  its operating angle is in most manuals

  10. vitesse never as normal used a swing spring  only on GT6 and spitfires  can be fitted as a must have

MK1 has a swing axle the shaft becomes part of the suspension wishbone  with one UJ  has a single ball race in the  rear trunnion.

Mk2 has a double wishbone rear suspension and a  UJ and metalastic  rotaflex coupling the hub is supported by two taper roller bearings th camber is more neutral

both these have the transverse spring hard bolted to the diff case.

on a Swinger the spring can pivot in a box thats bolted to the top of the diff case this allows a different body roll

configuration , not very suited to a Vitesse especially if loaded .(got that Tee shirt) an give a lot of body roll

the latest spate of shaft failures seem to be swing axle + CV with only a single row ball race

  11. there is a recent post about failed CV shafts and wheels/hubs shearing

CV  on a rotoflex twin brg hub should be fine ,but on a swing axle with only one bearing its limited design can fail easy as some have found the hard way

its common that Must Haves and bright idea's often make a good headache    but dont let that stop you

  12. on the 2000 + j type  just the pinion but cant for the life of me remember but im sure there  was no change to the pinion housing

the pinion was same diameter just swapped a 17 for a 18 toothed pinion as now had 14" wheels

on trucks before electronics we had an eccentric hsg, you could turn to match the mesh of different pinions ...easy

  13. the reserve is the same feed  suction pipe thats curved

when you select reserve you just turn the curve to a lower position in the tank its a very simple set up

if the tanks out its time to check the olive under the pipes sleeve nut maybe give it a nip up

i would leave the drain plug alone more tanks have been wrecked than those that removed easy .

replacement new tanks done have the silly drain spout or the reserve lever option   far simpler but can be pricey

fitchets make them but only herald sizes which is ok in a vitesse as you gain in boot width.

  14. there shouldbe a resistive white/pink ballast or a seperate ballast resistor to drop the oil to 6v with a bypass white yellow ?

from thesolenoid to boost the 6v to 12v when cranking  this needs a 1/5 ohm coil

if the ballast system has been removed or bypassed then you need a 3 ohm coil

the extra wire on the pos+ could be for electronic rev counter if the dizzy dosnt have the older cable drive
