yes overfilling will allow the damper oil to get pulled over the top of its tube on a rapid down stroke
the spilt just ends up in the mixture and gets burnt

as the angle drive sits above the chassis rails you wont get at it from underneath
unless you have magic fingers and can grip the sleeve nut

on production in the 70s 80s where terminal corrosion was a real problem we did many tests and in the end brushed/sprayed Tectyl a nice sticky brown mess into all connections
it worked

and while you in there make sure your new thermostat has a jiggle pin in its rim to aid filling /air escape if its not got one a small drilled hole 2/3mm will work
too many are sold with this important bleed omitted and you will get refilling problems and air locks

yes square hole at the bottom of the trailing shoe very common they are upside down need to do a fully readjust

remember most production torque figures were introduced to get non skilled operators to achieve with tooling a consistent and safe assembly on a production environment
donald duck and king kong have very diferent ideas of hand tight on production it gave a repeatable operation some quality ,

the figures are in the wsm
the clamp plate 1/4unf 6-8lbft the 7/16" grub screw is 18-20 lbft
this has to be tight enough to slide in a crash and not loose enough to give you any float
so tighten the 2 clamp plate bolts then torqure the grub screw and lock it with the big nut
if you have no torquremeter then a good hand tight will work its not that special
the outer column tube runs in a sprung clamp below the dash so in a smash column and tube all collapse
equally if you need more knee room a right good tug on the wheel and the tube will raise the whole assy as its all supposed to move under load

you will find they have always been 1/4"5/16" 1/2" and just got metrified

from my years drip petrol on the exhaust and it just fizzes away , drip brake fluid and kaboom it lights immediately
there was a period of modern designs that had strong shielding of the fluid reservior to protect from fire in an impact crash .

as the 1500 is in some start of emmision controls of the day should have a 88C thermostat fitted (all others are 82C) being leaner it runs hotter
sorry who ever took it out is on a fools errand .
i agree with all the hassle and rounded corners its as well you persevere to a change it
needs a GTR108 generic sender

all you need is remove the wheel cylinder weld backplate wear and dress back no need to pop the hub or even remove the shoes

14 give you a far better range of pad specifications and should fit on the same carrier 16s needs a bigger mount with wider hole spacings
all 2ltr used 16s never 14s they were herald/spitty
may find the hub needs abit of a chamfer to clear the caliper nothing you cant shave a bit off with a angle grinder
have a picture but its on my desktop
and on the manifold hunt you need one from a mk1 2 ltr

if the diaphragms are fitted with thelugs located looking down with the top cover off the two holes in the air piston base must be towards the engine.
easy to check just 2 x 4 screws
and do turn the dizzy by hand to find the bests running and then retard it a little from best
ignore the marks they may be wrong

and dont discount the 6 cyl damper ring may have lost its adhesion and the tdc timing marks on the damper ring are wildly out of place
Pete

can you get a compression test done but more probably a basic faul not a nasty one
fault charts are just aload of made up waffle like it doesnt mention the engine was missing
Pete

lot simpler fit mintex 1144 pads but needs a search if you are still on type 12 small calipers of the 1600

was she running ok before the flooding issues ????

so what coil is fitted does it have a make /model etc more clues helps us
Pete
-
come on lets start the contention
as you are only changing the dizzy switching and not changing the HT coil or the spark plugs leave them as the manual states

yes its just an alternative blanking plug for the redundant jet holder assy or the earlier CDS
only the front one has the starting valve choke withaa fuel feed via tube to the rear one as you have .
look quite workable to me providing the needles and springs are all the same its no worries

i have had elephant condoms from burlen and rimmer
