^ I was misusing one of those on Friday . .

^ when I'm cleaning the thread of nuts - I use my brake adjuster as a convenient handle for the thread's tap - then I have the other end free to turn the nut.  In this instance I was re-using very old but specifically shaped BSF nuts on a vintage motorcycle ..and then need to accurately but low torque them down for even tightness on aluminium cases - so their threads had to be clean and run free.

Perhaps the misuse of bought (or otherwise acquired) tools satisfies the criteria ?

    Pete.

Hi Pete, i never thought of using the spanner on taps, i have usually used a small adjustable when the proper tool won't fit. Very good tip that. If people like your good self ask for idea's and tip's or help i will continue try and offer a solution and where to get it, despite what Nojh say's :) After all it it is your thread Pete and doe's nobody any harm. I hope you are keeping well mate.

  2. Fibreglass resin and matting work very well on fibreboard Karl. Messy to work with if you have not used it before but doing a small section at a time? You could do away with the staples and bond in the alloy. You will be also able to sand it smooth and paint it if you want to. Two or three layers of the fine matting should do it. Don't do it in the garage if it's attached by a door as it stinks like hell, but will disappear in a day.

I have a cheap brake adjuster spanner and it cuts the fingers off me every time I use it! One of the last adjusters I worked on was so seized the entire vice was moving round. As we say over here: that idea with the socket soon put manners in it.

I have another that i have ground down at one end to fit the old style mini front drum brakes.

Has anyone come up with neat home made sheet metal working tools ?

I've seen cheapo manual folding devices on auction websites - are they any good for chassis-weight steel (like for making up new chassis U sections) ?

and aside from a disc on an angle grinder is there an easier way to cut long lengths of sheet metal ..that's too thick for hand shears.?

    Cheers, Pete

  6. I broke down in my Dolly auto when the nos condensor packed up. Sadly my box of spares and tools were on the bench at home  as i had been rustproofing in the boot :(  AA came out after testing agreed with me. I will put on the frame  said man, it's auto say's me. Will have to call for flatbed say's man. Disconnect prop say's me.... Not allowed say's man...... Lift the back end then say's me...... not allowed say's man.  Health and safety say's man, adding i would if they would let me as you are only 12 miles from home. Another half hour a very posh covered flat bed arrived and took me home and he pushed it in the garage for me. All went very smooth, so yes PJ it is for me and i have just renewed.

I have had cover with RAC since 1987 but having haggled the last few years an finding the premium is creeping up.
I had a chat with one of the Classic car insurers recently that offer breakdown cover as part of the package but I have a multi car policy not due for renewal until October.
I need cover for 4 cars including the Triumph ( 3 Drivers) and wonder if anyone has any recommendations / comparisons re RAC, Green Flag etc and experiences when on the continent in their Triumph....You can but hope.

    Thank Phil.

Try a company called Auto aid Mine has just come for renewal £64 for myself and wife both covered for any car including home start, only used them once for a puncture.... Arrived in 25minutes. It's online only but worth every penny.

I have contacted the trimming centre

Turns out I have a Britax Weathershield sunroof and for refurbishment they wanted £950 plus VAT which is out of my price range being a student so if anyone has any suggestions of where else to try?

Hi Alex, there is a chap close to you in Highley that used to fit them in the 70's and is very knowledgeable about them. Any good to you?

    Hello Chaps,

A follow up on this thread.......my weather seal clips turned up from ANG in Nottingham this morning. I went to fit them, but unfortunately although they are the correct ones that I ordered, they are the wrong size, so back to square one. There were no original clips fitted on my car, as some thoughtful individual had siliconed the seals on, hence my question to the Forum about the suitability of clips being offered by ANG for the Spitfire/GT6 models. Anyway, to establish the correct size I decided to have a bit of a search inside the doors to see if I could find any 'lost' originals. I took the cappings, handles and trim panel off the door, then removed what was left of the tissue thin moisture barrier sheet to get access to the door internals. I taped a small magnet to the end of a screwdriver and had a prod about, and hey presto! I found no less than 3 of the original clips in the door bottom caked in gunge. A quick clean up, and as you can see from the picture the original clips are much smaller than the one I posted a picture of earlier in the thread.........ergo.......there are different sizes for different models. I'm sure that the larger clip is right for the Spitfire and GT6, but not for the Vitesse/Herald.

I just wanted to highlight this difference so that others don't make a similar mistake, particularly when you don't have any original clips to inform your choice. I'll see if ANG are prepared to take them back, and if they have any of the right size.

    Regards,

    Ian

Hi Ian, if you are stuck they will do the same job, it's only the "spikes" that grip. I know what you mean though wanting the correct one's.

who makes what is always a theme to ponder but B & B were bought up by First line  and parts made to OE spec (they say) much is UK manufactured

I have just read a lot about people with Triumphs having clutch problems Pete. I suppose a lot of it is down to rumours. I know when i had my garage i would only fit Laycock, or i would let the customer supply what they wanted then there would be no comeback on me. Just thinking about Paula doing the job at the roadside.

I’ve bled the clutch still the same double de clutch doesn’t work either.

Thats not good Paula :(  Will he pull away in  second gear? Just thinking of a way of avoiding using second going up the box, it might not be to much of a problem going down as you could come to a standstill with third. I take it will go int second at standstill?
