I think you will find with old paint is to make sure it is stirred well, preferably with a drill with a whisk of some kind. That will make sure all the tint's are mixed in. (slow speed drill)

Living rural we always get mice in the garage despite number of cats nearby. I use traps baited with rat poison. The mice love it
Always catch 7 or 8 in the traps each season then nothing. Job done.

I'll try and make it 2 weeks. I haven't a buffer
The good thing is that it can't do it any harm. I think you have enough to do at the moment as well.

Do you think 2 weeks is enough?
A lot of people say leave it longer Paula, but i am a bit impatient so did it after a couple of day's with no problem. I did use a da electric buffer on slow speed with very fine cutting paste.

Lovely job Paula, that should polish up nicely.....

Thanks Karl, I do have a Dremel; I was thinking of a flap wheel in a drill which would have been brutal and probably blistered the whole thing through excessive heat, but never remembered the gentler touch of the smaller kit. That's something to try.

Think the Mk2 saloons may be a bit longer than the estates 4.65m? As long as my A6.
Nick
The facelift saloons are longer than the early ones because of the rubber strip on the bumpers...... Don't ask me how i found that out

I think if it was going to react? It would have done by now...... plenty of paint on there.

Spraying primer & then top coat on a newly fettled front corner valance using brand new sealed paint stored in various places at different temperatures over the years.
Good starting point as the finish is not crucial down there.
I take if it goes on ok it will be ok in the longer term?
Thanks in advance.
If it's celly? I have used ten year old paint without any problem but it was put into aerosol's got a good finish as well. But as Mark say's it could craze..... Worth a try though.

Thanks guys, it sounds like the Vitesse will be a non-starter then from a practicality view, the 2500S seems a much more sensible choice!
Much appreciated!
If you can find a 2000 with power steering? so much the better, they are heavy when parking etc. But then i am an old git
Tony.

Hi Rob, it has to be a 2500s
but then again i am biased as i have one.( I would love a Vitesse but they don't do an automatic,) bags of room for a family though and you can put 3 point fixing seat belts in the rear. The Dolomite 1850 is same, but not quite as much room. Look at all of them before buying. The only downside to a Vitesse would be getting children in and out of child seats.

Further to Clive's find http://simonebirchall.co.uk/index.html This company that fits eps is very good, and i have driven an 1850 Dolomite with their kit fitted, i can only say it's brilliant. It is worth ringing Simon who is very helpfull. He no longer supplies diy kits for safety reasons. The kit fitted to the Dolomite was barely noticeable.

I'm reviving this week-old thread as I've just finished a rear brake overhaul on my Spitfire Mk3, with new wheel cylinders, new shoes, new rear handbrake cable and return springs. This morning I've just had a legitimate opportunity to go for a test drive, shopping for essentials.
After reassembling the rear brakes, based on what's been said here, I used the following procedure:
1. Tighten brake adjusters fully.
2. Bleed brakes.
3. Adjust brakes so the drums turn without binding.
4. Lower the back of the car onto axle stands placed under the vertical links, to load the rear suspension.
5. Fit and adjust handbrake cable.
It's all worked a treat. There's no trace of binding from the rear brakes, the brake pedal is firm and stops the car as well as it should, while the handbrake lever comes up 4-5 clicks, easily holding the car on a hill. I did notice after finishing the assembly and adjustment, with the suspension at full droop, the handbrake cable is starting to tighten slightly and there's a trace of binding when turning the drums by hand.
I would definitely recommend adjusting the rear brake shoes first, then connect and adjust the handbrake with the suspension under load.
Nigel
All brakes should be done that way Nigel, you should even manually adjust self adjusters. I should be very rare to ever need to adjust a cable once set up. You will find this as well Nigel.

I’ve seen a lot worse to be fair. It will need a top coat fairly quickly as I think undercoat is porous
You are right Mark, it is porous. Might idea to warm it up with a heat gun or hair dryer Paula, before putting on the top coat.

Hi,
I can remember using "3-IN-ONE® Motor Oil is a SAE 20 special blend of high-grade oils" in dashpots.
Cheers,
Iain.
I can remember my dad always using that Iain. even using it on my bike as a kid. Still have a can now somewhere? But i use 20/50 now like most others.

Opie oil's carry a huge range of lubricants and Bilt Hamber products. They also have a very quick delivery service and are most helpful on the phone. They quite often have good prices in their Fleabay shop as well.

Is that in the gearbox as well Tony?.
Dave
No Dave, just the diff's. I think it would be a bit heavy for the gearbox? I can't even try it as all my cars are automatic. I have heard mentioned somewhere that 20/50 can be used in the gearbox?? Please don't try it without confirmation, but i can recommend the 140in the diff's.

I have to say, i have started using 140 gear oil in my Triumphs, they seem quieter and one in particular hardly leaks now

Have you tried holding the clutch down longer Paula before going into gear? My first thought was second gear synchro?
