GT6 Mk2 Steering Wheel

Hi all

Did the original gt6 mk2 have a gloss black plastic finish steering wheel or did it have a stitched leather cover. I have seen various steering wheels advertised as TR6, Gt6, some with the gloss black finish some with the leather. Also some with black three spokes, some with a silver finish. The black plastic maybe what's under the leather cover, and the original silver could have been painted black. What's your thoughts?

My 68 Mk2 Vitesse has the original wheel and it’s leather covered, I always assumed that they were the black plastic type.

I’ve owned the car from 70 so it’s all original

My early 68 Mk1 Vitesse has the original leather covered one so maybe they were used at a particular time or were an optional extra? Dont think its just the plastic type with a cover because the three segments where the spokes connect to the rim are also leather...

The 12-spoke wheel was fitted to Mk1 Vitesse, with a leather cover. The same wheel but without the leather was fitted to Mk3 Spitfire (prior to the 1970 model facelift). I think the (early) Mk2 GT6 was different, although it may have been the Vitesse wheel with soft plastic covers on the spoke groups.

Courtesy of John Thomason's 'Guide to Originality' for the GT6 Mk2  "The wire spokes of the 15" leather rimmed TR5 wheel were covered in a padding to create a distinctive wheel unique to th GT6 Mk2".

The Early Mk2 GT6 had the same wheel as the TR5 (Photo attached).

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I seem to have read the later Mk2's had the same wheel as the first Mk3's though?

It would make sense, as I'm fairly sure the 1970 model Mk3 Spitfire had the same wheel as the Mk4.
