Pete Lewis
having a local discussion today about older style tubed wheels with a low rim and centre well as to what problems can fitting tubeless tyres onto these if the pressure drops will the tyre detach ??? well never mind what i was brought up with which was loosely based on J rim was tubless ok and | B rim was not suited ie should have a tube but ?????? if you read this dialogue and form an opinion theres no prize , its not as simple as it seems we were just worried about members fitting tubeless tyres to tubed wheels and was this as safe as expected so have a digest of this explanation http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html Pete
Spit1972
Pete Thanks for this. I'm new to this forum, having recently acquired a spitfire mk iv. I have MWS spoked wheels that require tubes. I spoke to MWS who have quoted fairly high prices for reasonably standard tyres (tubeless) that could be fitted (plus tubes, fitting etc. etc.) Does anyone on the forum know of a tyre fitting outfit in the Woking (Surrey) area that can supply/fit tubed tyres (with tubes) and balance the wheels at a reasonable price? dougbgt6
Our cars are inherantly dangerous, no air bags, no crash bar protection in the body. Even more dangerous are tyres, that patch of rubber in contact with the road. I'm astonished that, pretty as they are, we are still allowed wire wheels. Don't do it, get some safer wheels! I don't like wire wheels, you can probably tell!
DanMi
The problem is that the inside of most modern tyres (which are tubeless) are rough which can rub the inner tube which is not good. I'm with Doug wire wheels look pretty but are a serious pain with lots of flex, rapidly wearing out splines, difficulty balancing and tube issues. I have a set sitting in my garden and don't use them.
Clive
Does anyone on the forum know of a tyre fitting outfit in the Woking (Surrey) area that can supply/fit tubed tyres (with tubes) and balance the wheels at a reasonable price? David Sorry, I don't. However, take care as wire wheels need a special method of balancing, just using a normal machine won't work. So you are wise to seek assistance.... Some places will refuse to fit tubes to tubeless tyres, I expect for fear of being held responsible if there is an issue. I have no idea if tyres are available to be used with tubes? However, plenty of people are using Wires, and I expect they are using std tubeless tyres. Not sure what you expect by reasonable cost? Tyre fitting is usually £15 a tyre, but tubes will not be cheap, and the specialist balancing? So I would expect a charge of £25-30 a wheel plus the tyre...... It may be worth contacting Moss, not far from you, and asking for their advice about fitters etc (they sell MWS wire wheel packages, so should have some knowledge)
Guest
Hello David. Clive mentioned MWS (Motor Wheel Service) and to be honest you will not find a better source of knowledge. http://www.mwsint.com/site/cms/contentChapterView.asp?chapter=1 I needed to contact them regarding the wire wheels on my Alpine, they were purchased from there originally. You could not ask for a more helpful, professional and knowledgeable group of chaps if you wished. They are located in Slough, so not that far from you and I would certainly give them a telephone call to have a chat regarding wire wheel issues etc. Good luck. Richard. Guest
David. Further to the above, the following information from the MWS website is probably the definitive answer you are looking for: Motor Wheel Service can provide a fitting and balancing service specifically suited to vintage, veteran and classic vehicles. The balancing equipment has been adapted to accommodate centre-lock wire wheels since they cannot be balanced in the conventional manner. MWS is experienced at fitting inner tubes and the more unusual tyre types that modern garages may not be used to. MWS can supply and fit beaded-edge tyres, straight-sided tyres (for two-piece rims with locking rings) and Michelin Bibendum tyres, as well as the standard radial and cross-ply types. Regards. Richard.

Pete Lewis
thanks for that , we have to be quick in the mad house or they nick your tea, be prepared for some occasional banter or thread drift .....it sort of happens i second the problems with wires look nice and the improved handling you get with steel or alloy being more stable. pete
