willis
Hi all, Does anyone know if it's possible to shorten the length of wind up/down door glass on a convertible Vitesse or will it shatter? The doors were new when the car was restored and no matter how front and rear runners are adjusted, the fit is too tight. The glass also catches on the back of the door at the top edge. I'm not the only one to have a go at fitting the glass and the opinion is to make a template and take a little off the straight edge at a time and when that runs up and down properly, get the glass cut to the same size. My concern is this possible or will the glass shatter? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Rob
Clive
It will shatter..... On the plus side it should be possible to get almost any glass place to make a custom window in toughened. And shouldn't be expensive.
Pete Lewis
Agree with Clive it will go bang as soon as you invade the toughen skin, even a small stone chip will emplode the glass You can only modify laminated and they were not made for drop lights Are you using new channels or old ones ?? Have you used all the available adjustment in channel spacing and the fit of the non draft vent assy, Is the wire anti spread fitted between the bottoms of the guides ( lkke made from a coat hanger ) Is it tight all the way up or just near the top? If you look down the channel Has the channel got bent ? Yes getting into close/contact with the rear of the door glass apperture is quite common Just some ramblings Pete
Clive
Another thought... Some later spitfires had a small slot at the back of the door, looks like it must be there for glass clearance. If the runners are not fitted, is there room then fr the glass, or are the doors just too short? Any way the runner fixing holes can be elongated? Stuff like that is often needed after "restoration" involving new panels/reskins/repro stuff and people not checking enough measurements before welding
Pete Lewis
And if made up with new channels its easy to build them with the brackest all wrong no matter how many photos and sketches you make And getting sunken rivets is not the easiest things to fit , Got that tee shirt Pete
willis
Cheers folks, with a bit of filing, hammering, and templates I've managed to get the "windows" to go up and down quite well. Still needs a bit more fettling but it's getting there. Thanks, Rob
ahebron
Or as the glass is flat get new ones cut to the correct profile. I went though this with my Vitesse 6 as I had the wrong shape made first time ☹️ Adrian

The slot on later spitfire doors was to stop the door frame from cracking at that point.
