All is not completely lost as at least one firm still does it, and I can recommend their restoration course having attended one as part of the resettlement process leaving the RN.  Watching racing XK120 panels being made in alloy was a joy; and the response to a question from somebody about 'filler' produced bemused looks.

Hi. Couple of the clamp joints blowing a little bit, between smaller box and back box. Haven't used cement yet, though was wondering if Blue Hylemar might work, as I have some and could make joints easier to separate in the future. What do you think please?.

I don't think Hylomar is suitable for the heat of an exhaust; that's why you need putty or paste.

waste of time using hylomar  as colin says must be a sealing past that hardens and takes the temperature without leaking

there loads to choose from  with lots of names

Or try bathroom silicon sealant. Some/many work fine away from the manifold. Not a good idea before a cat though.

That's why I wondered if Hylamar could work without running/seeping. I guess the end of exhaust still hotter than than the engine areas it's used for.

As an aside. I fitted a new petrol tap in boot, that had threaded hose stubs. These were leaking.

Phoned Hylamar and they said they had done some tests on petrol fittings and had worked, though couldn't guarantee it.

Sorted it out, though fuel not under pressure before pump and will have to see how it is long term.

I think PTFE tape us ok with petrol. Dead cheap, about 30p a roll or so. (Last time I bought it, i get 10 at a time,!)
