Hi all.  The latest hurdle as My car nears completion...

The fuel tank has started leaking.  After investigation I see that a section of the tank bottom is badly corroded on the outside because the felt fitted to the bottom of the tank had previously spent a long time wet I’m guessing.

There are numerous small holes and some tiny but not pin holes.  See pic.

Does anybody know where I might find a steel replacement please?  The only ones I can find are the £500 Ali jobs 😩😩

Or has anybody got good experience of a repair in a similar situation?

all advice appreciated

many thanks

Rich

Oh dear. Very common GT6 problem - because of that wretched felt as you say.

We had the same issue with two tanks. I was unable to find any replacement apart the the fabricated aluminium one you mention and I couldn’t find anyone locally to repair it.

In the end we repaired it ourselves. Something I was prepared to consider as the better one had been empty for decades. Even so, it had several hot caustic washes before we went near it with anything sparky! Was a bit of a mission as we cut out two fairly big sections, made repair patches and TIG  welded them in. Had extreme difficulty getting that leak tight so ended up lead soldering the joint then slosh sealing it. It’s been ok so far.....

May be worth trying to find an old school radiator specialist who will tackle it?

First port of call would be Chic Doig; he may have a second-hand one. By the time you get that one welded and sealed it may end up quite pricey anyway, but if you can locate a local branch, look for a company called Fuel Tank Renu - they refurbished my Estate tank (quite a few years ago now, admittedly) by splitting the welds, cleaning the inside and outside, rewelding and then lining the inside. An excellent job, fully guaranteed for twenty years.

I relined the petrol tank in my Vitesse using a POR15 kit from Frosts . My tank didn’t have holes though was getting thin and rusty inside

Yes, I had a very successful repair with a two part tank sealer. It was damaged in a small area (not corrosion), fortunately in a corner, so I was able to angle the tank and pour in the liquid which then collected in a puddle over the correct spot....

Quick follow up.  The renu option looks good but £400.  Local specialist repairer could  weld steel on top - not sure I like that.

Turned out dependable Chic Doug had 4 x 2nd hand on the shelf! Picked me the best one, £150.  Result!  Happy with that.

Thanks for all the advice - once this is done Finished car is within touching distance!    😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

By the way, Demon tweeks do suitable filler hose 51mm / 2” neck (original no longer available).   https://www.demon-tweeks.com/mocal-straight-fuel-filler-neck-hose-245473/?sku=MOCNH38NR/10/AKN&istCompanyId=a2904180-3a7d-4e56-b876-cf81c9512180&istFeedId=6fbc4b04-fd28-4ce1-8513-835c8f118690&istItemId=wplaptppa&istBid=t&gclid=Cj0KCQiApY6BBhCsARIsAOI_GjZSCocgh0SsF5YFS-exZdMqBiewdEfyk4iMB_fFjOQJJB3kVl-eeUQaAhIwEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

I originally got mine from a boat parts supplier, a marine grade metal-reinforced fuel pipe that they only sell in metres. It arrived through the post looking like a horse's handbrake, but it was too rigid and wouldn't let the filler cap sit properly so I bought some of the rally stuff, probably from Demon too, which was a lot more flexible.
