Triumph Gt6 mk3 - 2nd and 3rd gear noises

Hello

Just wanted to ask your opinion on something that came up on our recent test drive.

After about a mile of driving, we heard a screetching noise that appears to be from the gearbox tunnel area, increasing with the speed. All gears engage and clutch operates correctly. With the windows opened we could barely hear any noise outside of the vehicle.

after initial propshaft test in the garage there was no noise after turning the wheels.

we are slightly confused where to look next before stripping the vehicle down again... any ideas?

Many thanks

I would suspect the clutch/release bearing but how about driving it through the gears while on secure axle stands first?

Hi Johny, the clutch and release bearings are new. With the car placed on the axle stands we turned the propshaft with the first gear engaged and couldn’t hear anything. The next check will be to try the propshaft with the clutch pedal down.
No idea where the problem is 🤷🏻‍♀️
could this be the new exhaust? Although I am sure we would hear the banging noise more from the outside too

As I say, run the engine and drive through the gears. This should reproduce any problem seen on the road unless its related to actual load or rear suspension position. One thing, before doing this check that the drive shafts are not in contact with anything where they are hanging down...

new clutch release bearings can chirrup and squeal as the new bearing being a little stiff skids on the diaphragm fingers

this normally goes quiet when you touch the clutch pedal so there is firmer contact with the diaphragm fingers

and the squeal will be engine speed related not any gear speed related

to isolate any gearbox noises on some straight open road keep an eye on whats behind  run up to  30/40 mph

switch off engine    drop clutch   select thro all gears   if no squeals   its not gearbox

start engine   run though all gears  does it sqeual  does changing gears affect it   does pressing the clutch affect it

have a play let us know

dont discount fan belts

Pete
