Sandy Gibson
Hi folks I’m going from +030 to +040” pistons on my engine rebuild. Got a good deal on new pistons but without gudgeon pins. Old pins are good. Anyone know of a reason why they shouldn’t be interchangeable with new pistons? Thank for all help.
Nigel Clark
Check the old gudgeon pins visually for wear marks and if they all appear clean and unmarked, I would reuse them. You could also measure their diameters at different points using a micrometer as an additional check, though probably unnecessary if they are free from visual signs of wear. Do as Nigel suggests, but if it was me, I wouldn't waste the time and money and not replace them, no matter how good they are. Doug
Pete Lewis
be careful as its the pin that wears not the pistons general rule is put piston in bucket of hot water fit pins and when cold the friction of the pin should just support the weight of the con rod when hanging Pete
Sandy Gibson
Thanks all. Think on balance I’ll just replace the pins as well. Budget went out the window long time ago so might as well err on the side of caution!
Nick Jones
I’d be a bit surprised if you can buy pins alone. They normally come with pistons…. I agree with Pete on using the existing ones. With the proviso that old and new pistons are from the same manufacturer. Nick
