  1. same with our GTE, bloody great battery (its a hybrid) in the way... But do have a pair of gloves and some spray stuff to put in the tyre... mike
  2. if its the hydraulics sometimes pumping the clutch can give you a bit movement on the slave cylinder and free the clutch. But I had something similar, changed the clutch master and slave cylinder but still had problems. I found all the pivot points (clutch pedal, pivot between pedal and cylinder etc) were worn. I repaired, replaced all these points, reduced the amount of free play and got back to a good working clutch. just a build up of wear over 50 years! mike
  3. Pete that's interesting a bit like the wooden one I made when I changed the diff in my old TR6. The TR6 diff was a bit big to balance on the jack.... mike
  4. that has to be better than balancing it on a jack! Nice bit of kit. mike
  5. Nice to see you back Paula if they are NGK and oiled then you cant do anything with them... but then I haven't tried putting them into the dishwasher!!!! mike
  6. this thread has gone a long away from nuts........ Love it! Mike
  7. finally had time to fit the new bolt. Loctited and done up really tight. Engine started straight away and sounds really sweet, beginning to wonder if I ever did it up when I rebuilt the engine ... cheers mike
  8. Yes I have done that as well, in fact lost one of my favourite spanners. I heard a noise, looked in the mirror and saw it bouncing down the road but never found it! mike
  9. I have done about 1500 miles on my rebuilt engine. At about 800 miles I heard a large bang from the engine as I got onto the A14. Couldnt see anything missing and the car was running ok so I have carried on using her. But I started to notice a rumble sound when it was ticking over and it became a bit more difficult to start, as if the timing was out. I thought I had an exhaust leak but today finally found out what's happened.... When I put the engine back together I don't think I torqued up the crank bolt that holds on the lower pulley. The large noise I heard must have been the nut coming off and heading down the A14 as its no longer on the engine! Luckily it hasn't damaged the radiator or done any other damage. The difficulty with starting I think is because the pulley is moving around and, as I have EFI on the engine, and everything is timed from the toothed wheel bolted to the now slightly loose pulley... Will get a new bolt and check the pulley and key piece for any damage.... Feeling a bit silly, and realise I should have done so more investigating instead of driving her around.... I wonder if its worth putting a touch of Loctite on the bolt to make sure it doesn't come off again or/and just ensure its torqued up correctly.. Mike
  10. I had similar problems in my herald (3 rail box). I found that the linkage was very dry, no lubrication, once it got warm it was difficult to change gear. Solution was to take the remote off and strip clean and lubricate it all, Since then all been fine. Might not be your problem but worth a look, the only painful bit is taking the H panel between the floor and dash out (and putting it back again) at least there is more space on a Herald.. mike
  11. here is my Herald, I have fitted a couple of small modern spots into the grill (sorry not a great picture). Work very well to light the sides of the road. Main lights are Osram night breakers driven via relays. They provide excellent lighting. mike
  12. oh dear I have garage jealousy...... Nice car!
  13. When you start the car and the pressure rises the bubble should get smaller as the air is compressed. In fact if you knew the pipe diameter and measured the change in bubble size you could calculate the change in pressure.... Just need a camera to monitor it and some image processing to do the calculations..... Mike
  14. buy a new one from the club shop and the seal kits. Fits very well. Buy some foil covered foam insulation from Ebay and line it inside and job done. Throw original away..... Did mine last year mike
  15. Pete Thanks for the tip, I was hoping that I could do that, and for the link. At least I can get bits if I need to. Had a hunt around my Triumph spares and realised that I have an old Herald and Old 2 speed GT wiper motors, I had forgotten that I had them. So will have a play to see if I can convert the Herald to two speed (I know Nick has done this). It will be useful as we are planning another trip to Scotland in April next year and I don't expect the weather to be so kind as it was this year.....
  16. over Christmas I plan to remove the dashboard from my Herald and sort out some wiring and fix the wipers. Mine is an early 1968 13/60 with the close together wiper arms. Rimmers show this as the 22 teeth wiper gear, the later ones after 69 have a 32 teeth gear. Only the later wiper boxes seem to be available. On my car the wipers are covering about 180 degrees as there is so much wear in the gears (and probably the rack). Can you rotate the wiper box gear so that the rack is operating on an unworn part of the gear or is it just a quadrant and not a complete gear? Not really sure how much angle the wipers are meant to cover. The alternative is to change the motor and the wiper box is there anything to stop me doing this? At the moment just trying to sort the bits ready for when I get the dash out. Mike
  17. whats your route back? We could keep an eye out (or ear if the pinking is very very bad...) for you! Or let you know if anyone is nearby.... Mike
  18. see earlier comments. The larger version of this engine was fitted to Heralds in the early 1960's by Brabham and gave very good performance. Don't know about engine mounts, exhaust, propshaft etc but all doable. mike
  19. hope they get it back There does seem to be a down side to all the publicity, in the case of the recent blue GT6 it was burnt out. I guess it became to difficult to do anything with it and there was a another recent case of an early Herald that was stolen and then again burnt out.... mike
  20. don't know my original post was from 2016! Cheers mike!
  21. from Nicks link above quite impressive performance for early 1960's. "The Climax FWE gave 85 per cent more power than the original engine so the performance was somewhat improved.0-30 mph 3.4 sec0-40 mph 5.4 sec0-50 mph 7.8 sec0-60 mph 10.8 sec0-70 mph 15.2 sec0-80 mph 23.4 secStanding start quarter mile 18.2 secMaximum speed 101 mphFuel consumption 28 mpg "
  22. see https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/192707109035?ul_noapp=true Coventry Climax engine and spitfire gearbox. Is this what was used in the Braham heralds sold in the 1960's? would make a cool project mike
  23. just seen this up for sale in East Anglia auctions in Kings Lynn 3 November. 1968 Bond Equipe 2.0. https://angliacarauctions.co.uk/classic/saturday-3rd-november-2018/1968-bond-equipe-20/ mike
  24. Nick keep it as there are no longer available anywhere! There is always Ebay to fund your next project by selling just the bolt...... Yes the bolt has been sealed and locked. Cheers mike
