foshi
as mentioned on a previous post my gearbox is noisy . from a 1500 dolomite attached to a 1500 engine. my question is will a spitfire 1300 all synchro box go straight in clutch wise , non overdrive box paul
Josef
If I remember correctly your existing box was a YC prefix one. This is identical to FH/FK Spitfire 3 rail 4 synchro except for the Speedo drive ratios. Generally though all 3 rail boxes (originally!) had the same input shaft splines so can use the same clutch. johny
Well I think we decided you have a 3 rail gearbox from a 1500RWD which I reckon should use the following friction plate: Clutch Plate -10 spline - 7 1/4 inch Diameter - GCP103 (rimmerbros.com) If that is the case then I agree with Josef, although this is a bigger diameter clutch than the one used in a MkIV Spit it should all work no problem and even first gear ratio should be the same.... Pete Lewis
1300 spitty friction plate seems to be machine cut 10 spline not the rolled spline of the 1500 ???
johny
Seems like the 1500 RWD (not Dolomite) being earlier was fitted with a 3 rail box so should have a 10 spline shaft...
DanMi
best plan is to get the box out and have a look, did both engine and gearbox come from the same car? who knows what is there if the car is not standard
johny
In fact that clutch plate that Rimmers sells is for non UK 1500 Spitfires that had 3 rail boxes! Its bigger than the MkIV Spit clutch and I guess they probably also used it in the 1500 RWD...
johny
Just now, DanMi said: best plan is to get the box out and have a look, did both engine and gearbox come from the same car? who knows what is there if the car is not standard I suppose it would be nice to have replacement box ready to go in as old one comes out... Pete Lewis
the joys of classic mix and match and the unknown logic of any previous owners a look see is always a good start Pete
johny
I reckon theres a very good chance the PO just bought an engine/gearbox out of a scrapper and stuck it in! In fact it was a very good choice because they got a 1500 (personal taste I know) but with a 3 rail box so no problems with propshaft length or gearlever position etc
foshi
thank you for input , have purchased the box my thinking can be no worse than the one i have fitted spoils the drive of the car . see what clutch kit i have when i pull the box paul

DanMi
of course If I remember this is in a herald, so may need the gearbox output flange swapped over depending on what was done with the prop
foshi
johny who knows no history all i can say someone looked after it,. best chassis i have ever had no welding original paint under waxoil . few body issues but not much , think was probably laid up due to the box
foshi
flange looks the same as mine
foshi
forgot to mention the one thing i had to do was grind the slave cylinder as to slide it forward the clutch bit was at floor level hard to get reverse, works fine now nice feel to pedal will be back for clutch advice once out paul
DanMi
3 minutes ago, foshi said: flange looks the same as mine ok so they changed the propshaft flange from the smaller herald to the larger later one, rather than the output flange. It will probably fit just fine.
johny
I did wonder about the clutch hydraulics because as it seems the 1500RWD has a bigger clutch than the original Herald one then the master cylinders might have been different sizes.... johny
Rimmers certainly list two different clutch master cylinders for the Dolomite 1300 and 1500 but not sure how they vary....
DanMi
all spitfires with a diapragm clutch use the same slave cylinder as the herald (well some a cast iron rather than ally but fuctionally the same

Theyve got part number 158695 for 1500 and GMC1023 for 1300. Both in stock but big difference in price...

I know some, (possibly all??) dollys use a larger one than the small chassis cars.
thescrapman
If you have had to mod the slave to get a nice feel, now will be best time to fix the actual problem. possibly the arm worn, wrong bearing, pivot repaired with a bolt etc.... foshi
possibly the wrong bearing was my thoughts paul
