Neil Clark
There's a project car on eBay with chains on the rear shock absorbers. It's a similar age to my UK spec car - was that an original feature? What were they for? Clive
They look to be a horrendous bodge to prevent the rear wheels going into positive camber. Not original, not a good idea...
JohnD
This may be an attempt to introduce "zero-droop" into the suspension. Zero-droop is a racing concept, in fully adjustable suspensions. The aim is to alter the settings until there is no preload on the coil springs at rest, so that when jacked up, the suspension doesn't droop. This secures the maximum of spring and damper movement in action, but the whole subject is highly subjective and widely misunderstood! And in a swing axle, with n o other adjustments, just won't work! John
Colin Lindsay
Maybe they're to stop anyone stealing the rear shocks? I'd worry that's some kind of home-made bump stop, to stop the rear axles hitting the chassis rails when going over large bumps at speed.
Neil Clark
Apart from the issue that the bolt on the lower end is not fully engaging the nyloc nut....................

Pete Lewis
it was not uncommon on live axles to have a thick canvass strap to stop the rear axle dropping too far more of use when jacking it up My 53 Minx certainly had one each side , to restrict axle drop dont think it had any good anti roll ability how do you tell Pete
