Hi Guys,

I have been chasing down some very random banging and clunking noises from the rear end, been underneath and checked every bolt and nothing loose, no obvious problems when rotating the prop shaft and halfshaft's by hand other than a bit of backlash between prop shaft and diff, no obvious problems with the tie rods either.

The UJ's were changed less than 3000 miles ago by a respected Triumph specialist, and for this reason I have put the UJ's aside as a cause.

Would I be wrong not to suspect the UJ's. Any other suggestions of where I might investigate next?

is the clunking wheel driveline power/  related or rough surfaces or road/ ride  conditions

loose body bolts can make a heck of a racket especially the ones above the diff x member

a fair bit of free rotation on the diff coupling is quite normal its just play /float in the planet/sun gears

have you looked at the diff mounts and spring box fixings ??

Hi Pete,

Thanks for those comments, the clunking certainly appears random, however I might lean towards road surface if I had to. Have looked at all the bolted connections except for the spring box, will have a closer look at the diff mountings and spring box next. Loose diff couplings sound a good place to look.

This reminds me of a friends Escort, random banging from the rear.  When jacked up for inspection, the suspension was on full droop and everything appeared tight.  However, when viewed with the car's weight on the wheels, the handbrake cable could be seen to be loose so that when driven over a rough piece of road it banged against the boot floor.  It may be worth checking for loose components with the suspension loaded. If the shock absorber bushes are loose, this may not be apparent with the shock absorber under tension from the weight of the wheel.
