Bordfunker
I’ve finally almost got to that point in my rebuild where it’s time to fit the core plugs. Question though, do the core plugs require a sealant, or is it just sheer interference fit which seals it? Karl
DJB350Z
I'm not sure if they require it per what the manual says, but I didn't see any harm in adding some when I did it recently. I'd curse it if there were any leaks, especially now that ancillaries are going on and I can see how difficult some of them would be to get at. Bordfunker
Thanks guys. Can I use RTV for this? Karl
Pete Lewis
they are best left dry you dont want any slippery sealer which can help them escape under pressure maybe a film of Wellseal or a Loctite use something that Sets Pete
Colin Lindsay
I've replaced them in three engines in the last few years and on two (third one hasn't been filled with coolant yet!!) they have leaked from the central one behind the manifold, always the hardest one to get at! None of the other plugs, just that one. If I ever do more, I'll certainly look at sealant.
johny
I think a lot of it is the condition of the block hole - if theres any corrosion or damage to it then getting the plug to seal is always going to be harder. Ive never used the disc type plug but they look even riskier...
Stratton Jimmer
I have never replaced a full set, only the odd one here and there. I have always done them dry though but have ensured that the plug hole is nice and clean with a light rub with fine emery paper.
