and does the tachometer work? as there should be 2 wires from the coil -ve one to the distributer and one to the tachometer (white/slate)

Think that might be the other wire in the photo that then connects to the black wire from the -ve of the coil. Itll work but a strange way of doing it...

you are correct it looks like it has 1 wire from the coil -ve that then joins to 2, 1 to dizzi and the other to tacho. Odd but functional

I wonder if it had some sort of electronic ignition which has now been removed without the wiring being returned to its original set up? Trouble is more connections equals more possible failure points...

Your + battery cable looks like it has poor connectors both ends as well, and I would want to know where that 2 core flex goes before disturbing anything.

Given that both elements of that domestic cable are connected to the -ve terminal, I suspect the PV has used whatever cable they have available to improve some dodgy grounds! Time to trace where it goes...
