sulzerman
2500 tc Hi all just been out for short trip and engine cut out ignition lights were on , turned key and restarted and ran as normal. Went down road same thing happened again, restarted ran as normal. Anyone got any ideas? I thought may be coil? Fitted with pertronics electronic ignition. Plenty of petrol could be seen in pump. Pete Lewis
Does sound like a high resistant /corroded terminal breaking the supply ?..but where start at the battery posts and work through Pete
dougbgt6
Or fuel blockage, but to quote the Grand Master “but where?” Doug
dannyb
Does it start running rough before cutting out or is it sudden. If it starts running rough then cuts out it could be the fuel pump not putting enough pressure so will fill the float bowls when idle but will not keep up when the engine is driven. dougbgt6
Yes, I was thinking an intermittent blockage floating about in the fuel line, the dread rubber slivers or the pink sludge. Doug
Clive
Is this a new issue? is it a sudden death? If so most likely (almost certainly) electrical. I think late saloons had a ballast resistor? I know later spits had them as a high resistance wire as part of the loom, maybe saloons are the same? Or a separate ballet resistor? Worth checking all connections. And possible intermittent breaks to the circuit. A test lamp wired in to the coil +ve may be handy, if it drops out you know that is the issue and can work backwards. If the coil is the same (6v or 12v) as your spit swap the coils. Simple tests....
sulzerman
Yes first time it's happened, its got a 6v coil and ballast in the loom. Will get the test light out! Thanks for the ideas
Pete Lewis
Are you running the petronics on 12v most electronic units dont like a low voltage and if on ballast and a low battery state you can drop Below the operating range of the unit and it all comes to a stop Pete
dougbgt6
Pertronix/Aldon do a wide range and there are some specifically for ballasted systems, so if you’ve got the right one you’re OK. Mine worked fine till I accidentally pulled a wire off 😩 but I got a spare part from the USA, reassuringly expensive!
