68vitesse
Need to protect other items in garage when using angle grinder and welder, screens I have looked at are more about protecting onlookers from the welders glare. Just need something to stop the red hot bits of flying metal, a rigid screen i.e plywood is not an option. Many thanks Paul
Badwolf
Get some cheap metal shelving and screw the shelves vertically between two of the uprights. This will form a screen that you can move arount easily and disassemble to store... you can always use it as a shelf at a later date!!
68vitesse
Think I was asking the wrong question, should be welding blanket not welding screen. Regards Paul
NonMember
The problem is that you need a non-flammable sheet. Most readily available "blanket" type materials will catch fire when a bit of weld spatter or spray of grinder dust hits them. There's no real force involved so no great thickness or strength needed, just flame retardant and heat resistant.
JohnD
Paul, You want something flexible to lay over vulnerable items when welding/grinding? Have you not googled or looked on eBay for "Welding blanket"? £16 gets you a meter square item in woven fibreglass - or you can get a carbon fibre one! https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=welding+blanket&_sop=15 Or look for 'welding curtain' There's a used one 6ft square, for a tenner! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DARK-GREEN-WELDING-CURTAIN-ON-STAND-6FT-X-6FT-6/133357076094?hash=item1f0cb37e7e:g:xGQAAOSwQYxeZ5qS John
PeterH
I use a Fire Blanket, 1m square woven fibreglass, bought from Toolstation. Their current price is £11.88. I expect Screwfix do one.
68vitesse
Fibre glass blankets seem reasonable, carbon fibre from China big jump in price for a decent size, welding screens seem to be based on heavy duty pvc so perhaps not the best material. Thanks to all for their input. Regards Paul
JohnD
That welding screen looks absolutely standard in industry. PVC not an issue. Each 'spark' from a grinder is so hot it can embed into glass, which may be your objective to avoid, but the thermal load is so tiny that it won't do any harm to thick PVC, except embed in that, which what's more captures it! PeteH
E-Bay has cheap 1Msq Fire blankets for as little as £2-70 and free postage?. which is probably all you need? Pete
