AlanT
Hi, Is No. 1 cylinder nearest the front or back of a 1500 Spit? Appreciate if someone can clarify please so I can set static timing. Thanks Alan
dougbgt6
Alan, Front! A question I was once scared to ask, a question so fundamental they don't bloody tell you! Doug

DanMi
To be honest you can time to either 1 or 4 anyway, Whichever has both valves shut when at Top Dead Centre and rotor arm pointing to relevant HT Lead
NonMember
It's a fairly (but not completely!) universal convention that cylinder 1 is the one at the "front" of the engine, which is defined as furthest from the flywheel and gearbox. This definition resolves the question for transverse engines, or even weird installations like some 1970s Renaults, where the gearbox was at the front of the car and so the "front" of the engine was nearest the back of the car (and number 1 spark plug was under the bulkhead where you couldn't get at it).
