Yes, the fake tension between Ant and the Fat Man is lame. Ant didn't initially like the Stag he did on the car restoration series with Philip Glenister but I seem to recall he came around in the end.

Ok so they referred to it as orange in the programme. Even so it did make a welcome change from endless Audis, BMWs and Porsches which are the standard Saturday morning fare these days. "Swap two sensors and the headlamps and hey - it's finished..."

I find that even in the later Edd China series there were a lot of

"This is an easy job with this specialist tool!"

*googles the tool: 300 (or more) of your favorite currency....*

Case in point: Edd checks the alignment with a laser based system or when Ant checks the weight distribution with a computer controlled scale...

I don't mind them showing these things exist but it should be something reasonable to be done at home and if not give a guestimate about what a specialist would charge.

I have only seen a few episodes of the new series with Elvis and seems more Edd China-ey, although his youth means he never saw these cars new or even as common used cars cars. I also personally don't care that he was an "F1" mechanic. Any motorsport mechanic has my respect period/full stop. When I walk the paddock at amateur events you can just feel the comradery and usually in most other motorsports as well.

TCR Germany guys are constantly in each others' garages.

F1? Hmm...

I'd rather he was a back-street mechanic of forty or fifty years experience fixing bodges for people who don't want to pay. That's where you pick up the real tips and tricks.

Wheeler Dealers became more of a 'how do they do that?' and 'how do they build that?' sort of thing where they went to the factories and watched hubcaps being made, or turbos being rebuilt; fascinating in their own way but ho-hum, back to the garage for the rest of us. I'd rather find out how to fix an exhaust with an old tin can than how to use some massively expensive piece of computer-controlled wizardry that I could never afford, but for many viewers that's not where the interest lies.

Maybe that's why I like Shed & Buried... they make a profit of £50 on a car and it makes their day.

I can see why things like tin can exhausts and coat hanger fixtures aren't part of the show for liability reasons. The problem is all ICEs up to a the late 90's have more or less the same problems and can only be fixed a certain number of ways. Filling up coolant, changing oil, greasing ball joints etc. over and over again would get tedious...

A point made on the Sniff and Smith podcast is that many cars that are for the most part unspectacular can have one thing that makes them unique. It doesn't have to be something mechanical or engineering but it would be better for them to cover more cars like that.

I do take exception though when the repeat myths or half-truths much like Ant's TR7 disdain yet his love of X19. I liked for example when Edd did a Stag he was worried about overheating but they eventually discovered that wasn't really an issue.

I don't know what the truth was behind the whole Ant Anstead/TR7 thing - I hope he was just unable to take part in the final filming, maybe due to shooting over-running the end of his contract with Discovery? so they just scripted the whole "I hate TR7s" narrative as a cover.  Whatever the reason I'm guessing Mr Anstead regrets it as he just came across as a complete and utter dick - especially when you consider there was basically nothing wrong with the car and from memory all they NEEDED to do was replace the carb!

WD is a bit better with Elvis but still suffers from the "too much scripted drama" that lead to Edd China leaving and infects so many of these shows, especially Car SOS.  Cut out all the transparent "I'm going to sneek in and pull a fast one on this supplier, who's going to be suprised to see me (despite the 30 man film crew standing all around them and the fact the filming has been scheduled for months)!" and "We bought the car for £100 and only spent £3 on string and look at it now (trying to ignore the 4 new tyres, replaced chrome, full bodywork detailing, etc)!" nonsense!

 

Have to say I can't stand Shed and Buried.  It's like a cross between Wheeler Dealers and American Pickers but made by a few guys from the pub on a budget of £6.

That's exactly why I like it. The budget, not the 'cross' bit. I live in an entire country of guys like that, 'let's buy a car cheap, clean it up and try to sell it for three times the price' sort of thing. Guys who wouldn't spend Christmas and you'd swear the air going into the carb had to be paid for. I like S&B when they clean a carb out, pull out a dead insect, bolt it back on and the engine starts in a great puff of smoke. WD, they would have the carb completely rebuilt, Ed would know the exact problem and talk all about it, they'd spend ££££££S on it and the car would start first time as it was only a dead sensor somewhere. Plus: on S&B they sometimes keep the vehicles for themselves. THAT I can relate to, it makes it all so much more personal and charmingly amateuristic.

Isn't the issue with "programs" that they have to be somewhat "scripted". There is no Real "fly on the wall" stuff, realistically. The research has to be done, camera`s have to be fitted, positioned, lighted etc;. And once they have, they have to have people willing to talk to them, very few members of the "public" can string two words together, with a camera pointed in their faces. So it`s down to the "pro`s", multiple takes and with the end result you know has had to be scripted?.

With Banger`s and Cash, the fact that Derek has been auctioning for years, makes him "easier" talking to the camera, but someone has to edit the footage?.

I misspoke (typed?) I meant Flipping Bangers.... Bangers and Cash is OK if I have nothing else to do... which nearly never happens...

What I do find interesting though is when they have cars they claim are worth XXXX$€ whatever and at auction they almost never get that...

Goes back to it is only worth what someone is willing to pay!

Watched WD this morning about 8am, they were restoring a Morgan - bought for £13000, sold for £21000, and when they fitted the replacement chassis and new suspension Ed refitted the old rusty bolts and already-used nylocs. I'd have thought that for £7000-approx profit they could have afforded new ones.

(they also pretended to be fitting the body to the new chassis - such a nerve-wracking moment - except that you could see the scrapes in the body where they'd lowered it down already, then removed it again.)
