+200k spit 1500 engine rebuild

Hi all !

I've been busy getting the original engine of Fox apart.

I've put in my spare block in july after 320.000kms (and burning oil).

Now.. only thing I found (and my uncle) is glazed bores...

But will let it checked over if the bores are within spec.

Camshaft was renewed a few 1000miles ago and still looks good (but maybe going to fit an mk3 profile one , not going to crazy with it).

Now.. i checked the endfloat with dail gauge of the cam and crank (its 0.24mm on the crank)

My manuals give 2 specs for the crank

-Haynes : 0.006 -  0.014in (0.152 - 0.355mm)

-Robert Bentley : 0.004 - 0.008in (0.102 - 0.203mm)

anyone know what it best be ?

Will check it again when the sump is off and with new thrust washers.

Where i drove 100miles on the motorway and then looked it was just under half between min and max or sometimes more ...

So to drive back it was best to fill it up again.

That was before I put another head on.

But still wasnt great.

think there were some vague triumph figures on this at around 1000miles to a pint

which was about an industry standard of the day it just got them out of any warranty

back in the 60s there was  i think Shell did 100k in a whole range of cars  the winner was the Hillman minx  still over 1000 a pint  some like a cresta  were down to 50 a pint

memory faded on this and i dont see any reference on google about it

I read it very recently in some handbook or other and can't find it this morning. It'll turn up shortly...

Reminds me of the local story where the guy goes to buy an ages-old car and asks the seller: "Does she use much oil?" to which the seller replies: "She would, if she could get it...."

I've seen mention of a dealer advisory, specifically on Mk3 Spitfires, saying not to accept any warranty claims for high oil consumption unless it was worse than a gallon every 3000 miles, which is under 400 miles to the pint. It's also two complete sump-fulls every service interval.

luckily  most were a bit better that that even after 50 years of use

i never had to top up the 1600 or the current 2000  between services  but alas   they did make 'smokers'

and these wide specifications were there to duck warranty claims

the idea of a boot  full  of oil cans  would keep me awake at night
