Paul Amey
I've got twenty litres of white vinigar in my Vitesse petrol tank for descaling, it's working a treat. Need to flush it out soon and add some Bilt Hamber atom mac , it's a water soluble oil which you dilute.
daverclasper
Vinegar does seem good for that, though always used brown/malt. Is there much difference?
ed.h
Vinegar is a weak acid, and will dissolve rust. Slightly stronger acids will do it quicker, and without the smell. Ed

Ed Perfectly correct, But the stronger acid`s (usually) require neutralisation or it leaves the surface prone to "flash" corrosion,
JohnD
The same question was asked 'in another place' not far from here. A suggestion was electrolysis, using a sacrificial electrode protected by a perforated plastic tube. That would prevent it touching the tank walls or filler, while making contact with the electrolyte. No toxicity, no flash rush, no risk to eyes or skin. Anyone tried it? Andrew
Would it just be easier and more reliable to just buy a new tank?

OTOH, I use quite a lot of HCl, and with proper cleaning (but no explicit neutralization), I don't see a flash rust problem. Ed

Even where new tanks are available they're not very accurate.

Could be, though some haven't got the budget, and part of the enjoyment can be in actually restoring, rather than throwing money/always replacing. Also the materials and actual build quality can often be suspect on new parts
