  1. nothing arrogant about it   adding your machine to your profile page helps those who like to sniff out a model

its an easy thing to feel everyone knows what you are on about  (we do know you )

keep posting  help is always not far away ( even if we forget what you drive  ha )

  2. with the accumulation of growing problems its  unfortunate that the pockets get  Deeper

but its all heading for a good place and the engine will be far more  trouble free in its new life

think you will be more than pleased when you have your first revived  drive and get the smile

    well done Bernard

  3. the vernier only adjusts  from whatever base timing setting you have .

its not some magic separate control it just  rotates the points base plate position

the vac unit advances under cruising throttle positions and isa MPG help of around 4 mpg has no effect on acceleration

the vacuum is generated from a very small hole near the throttle plate  when partially open as in light throttle use

at full throttle it does nothing .

  4. without any clues about just what car we are dealing with i presume this to be the general dash mounted ign switch

if you remove the switch from the dash there is a simle small sprung plunger you need to depress the plunger and the barrel assy can be removed  get a barrel or complete switch James Paddock Limited - Triumph Stag, Spitfire, TR6, TR7, GT6, Vitesse, Herald Parts and Spares Specialists. 5. under the air piston casting you will find a small pin witha spring this is to do a mixture test by lifting the air piston

the idea does work but its a very touchy feely thing  and needs light fingers

the pin will contact the piston inside you lightly raise the pin to just feel it make contact  thenraise the pin a couple of mm  dont yank it up

there are now3 possibles   you are looking for a hint of change not some radical offering

lift the pin 2mm   if the idle increases around 50 rpm for a few seconds its set too rich

if nothing happens its about right

if it falters 50rpm its set too lean

so once again its small changes and gentle fingers with hints of change

yank it up and it will just stop , this must have air filters fitted   doing without is a total waste of time

so its another  get the ears on ,  this works thats why the pins are there. if they have been left corrooded for years may need

a squirt of lube to free the pin , this applies to Strombergs and SU     so go hunt the pin it may be missing on later CDSE when emision rules started to evolve

but on  HS1  HS2 HS4 CD CDS CDSE

  6. On the C5X  all has to be accessed by the silly touch screen the simple cancell button on previous models has been deleted

so its hunt the menu's to find where it hides and  select  OFF  till you restart and its all back ON

life was much simpler without these stupid must haves

the cruise control is so complicated you either get a memory of 120 or enter  a self steering mode if you let go the stg wheel it tells you to HOLD THE WHEEL

then the brake distance beeps and flashes Brake  Brake Brake    why we only past a post box

Grrrr      need some custard and apple pie

  7. just shows what can be achieved without any special anything but your ears

thats a good learning curve  keep at it

the idle may not hold a coin on its edge but with correct timing and mixtures /tappets set  should be a nice and steady one

  8. most moderns have all the wonder pain in the butt driving aids  you dont need

some thing useful like a usb socket in the mirror hsg for a dash cam makes more sense .!!!

My C5x you can set the collision warning distance but the do you want to change lanes self steering and stop start need resetting every time you fire up

do we need any of this ludicrous crap .  the stop start stops just when you want to take off so the auto jumps into rag it mode and you tear off at a silly rate

the constant twitch chasing white lines a verges , followed by your too close  is all a PITA ive managed to drive safely since 1964  and dont need this crap

    >>>>may be i do the crash i had mounted the 2000 into the back of a colleagues  Herald  out on a club run   but   thats another story

but driving aids are just a frustrating hindrance on your own grey matter

well at least the suns out .and we emptied the Port bottle at lunch  Ha !!

  9. gear oil doesnt degrade with contaminants like engine oil does,

there will be particles of wear and tear  but they tend to sink in the bottom and dont circulate much as you think

the OD  (both J and D  and A ) do have a filter that needs an occasional clean as this traps worn lining materials from entering the pump

but gear oil tends to stay clear and clean

you could try a EP140 makes thinks quiet but i dont hold out the synchro will cope with it .

and the OD would be very lazy (designed to run on engine oil but triumph gearboxes wont like it )

    hence they spec EP90 GL4

  10. having the rad cap  of correct depth is a basic must have, what pressure is pretty immaterial as this just raises the boiling point of the coolant and has no effect on usage might induce loss from leaks

but if there is no sealing then the coolant will just escape and  a trial with the new cap before

any wild ideas of replacement radiators ,a check on the thermostat may be worthwhile

  11. we had a local spitty where the PO had plated the floor and fitted risers to get the seat to fit ie the floor well for the foam basket had disappeared the result was you had to look over the screen to see where you were going

the plate got removed .nothing untoward with the orig floor spacers removed  normality resumed .

the seat basket and floor is very different to H & V floors presumable to keep the bum near to the tarmac

  12. there is little load on the rear mainshaft brg, they last , the input shaft relies more on oil level if its low then the front is the first to give up then whine in all gears and when idling

mainshaft tip failure goes quiet when in 4th

as for synchro if theres been years of clashing then the chamfer on the dog teeth gets chimbled and then synchro will never revive as whats known as rock over fails and the baulk ring lets go halfway through a change

theres a lot to look for when contemplating a rebuild it can cost a fortune and have little gain

trouble is decent Core is getting hard to source

  13. my Sister had a office services shop in Banbury where they repaired things like typewriters

when the business closed we emptied the 3 story shop , found a dumb waiter under some cladding

you could get 6 typewriters in it    it went down like  a rocket and spilled them out on the ground floor

think we scrapped about 200 old machines is various states of old age but had to lie at the tip they began to ask where

they all came from   happy days
