  1. Just to clarify, Peter - is it tarry or sooty? This one was - I think - caused by an overrich mixture but the deposits seem drier and more powdery than tarry; how does this compare with yours?
  2. You mean the short wishbones to the top balljoint? I have literally dozens of them. PM me.
  3. There's quite a gap between door and post so wires can be suitably wound to allow them to stretch when the doors are opened, but I've seen people caught out by running the wire through the aperture for the door stay, and then having them chopped in half. I have a set of door trims with the speaker in this area of the door and will fit them to my 1200 once it's at that stage. I bought them at the TSSC International years ago and stored them away.
  4. My mistake - you're correct - it says: fitted with 'Overdrive only'. Another off day, it seems.
  5. I don't think it's a plug, just a loose-fitting bung, same as the circlip in the diff. Rivetted but not tight so as to move about, let pressure out and keep the hole clear as it moves.
  6. Yep, that's the best way - a person can shift about as required whereas a dead weight can't. They don't need any kind of mechanical expertise, they just have to press as required...
  7. Catalogue says rivet fitted on non O/D only, so don't have one myself to go out and look.
  8. In case we go directly and buy from them, without going through a parts supplier who presumably add their own whack on.
  9. There appears to be a groove for some kind of insert right along the middle; that Spitfire one would be close to my early GT6 bumper and I reckoned from the start it wasn't correct for mine.
  10. That was back in the days when £60 bought a lot more...
  11. That's good, £18000 should get me home with a few pennies to spare.
  12. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Original-Triumph-Bumper-Possible-Triumph-Herald/143233174315?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3D3c706c70f14846ef837fde142f29f840%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D233290821312%26itm%3D143233174315%26pg%3D2481888&_trksid=p2481888.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3Afd0ef49b-b20f-11e9-894e-74dbd180426d|parentrq%3A3e34ac4516c0ad31c356f069fff96d89|iid%3A1 Seller isn't sure if it's a Triumph, I know it's not Herald but I'll post a link in case it's a rare bit of some other model that someone desperately needs. I thought it might be for a Bond?
  13. Wife's Freelander is the same; I don't like it as with anything more than a pinhole the stuff's useless. I was with the AA, simply because I worked for the RAC way back and didn't want any of my former workmates laughing at me if they attended a breakdown... but gave it up as membership had gone to an unbelievable price. I called them out three times in over twenty years of membership... but they claimed I had broken my membership by missing a year so was not eligible for any kind of long membership discount. (I originally typed long member discount but don't know if you get anything for that...) My GT6 Insurance supposedly has breakdown cover, but I've not tried it yet.
  14. I know that the one on my GT6 collapsed at one end and had to be replaced; not sure what the cause was but a new one could only help.
  15. I'll be passing in August en route to Stratford; I might have a breakdown if I don't get a pint of fluid in the beer tent on Saturday evening...
  16. Yes, technology marches on and this certainly helps replacing the entire hose... except I didn't have one, nor did the poor mechanic who arrived and said: "YOU LIVE WHERE?????"
  17. Shotblasting will get into the very small nooks and crannies that the wire brush won't; it will also uncover any seriously thin metal by blowing straight through it, so you'll know where the weak parts are. Wire brushing is good enough provided you don't polish the metal too shiny for paint to adhere, but in my own experience won't leave as good a finish. It's all down to your personal taste and the kind of finish you want; perhaps I was just too lazy to wirebrush the entire thing? With reference to your springs - I wirebrushed my old Herald ones but fitted new shocks; with the top plates shotblasted and painted they came up looking very well and I got a few more years out of those. Toyota blue, I think that was - it was in a bargain clearance box...but you can see how they started off - example on the left
  18. It was; it was like trying to fit bagpipes to the engine when I obtained a spare. The top part split along the lower edge for about six inches so any kind of repair was impossible. I saw what I thought were puffs of smoke in the rearview mirror; pulled in and stopped but there was nothing obviously wrong, so continued for about a mile to the next roundabout and checked - when I lifted the bonnet there was coolant everywhere. No damage to the engine, thank goodness, as I kept that one for the next seven years and still miss it.
  19. Yep; he ran naked down the street shouting "I've found it" to which all the Greek women shouted: "I'd throw it back if I were you!"
  20. I've no idea of your carb setup but some kits for specific parts of our cars contain parts for all models, so maybe the bushes are included but not needed for your model of carb? Or is it possible they're included so that you can repair any wear on your carbs by using them now, even if they were never fitted before? An expert will be along shortly...
  21. My Discovery blew a radiator hose on the M6 just above Preston on the way to Stoneleigh; as it was 4pm on a Saturday we couldn't get a replacement and the poor Recovery driver had to take me all the way to Stranraer and get me onto the midnight ferry, then return home again himself, while I was picked up at the other side by another driver who took me home. I got there about 4am. As I had the same option from the AA - home or onward journey - I did debate about going on to Stoneleigh... but as I would have had to get home somehow afterwards I had to forego two nights accommodation and the pleasure of the show. I reckon I got my money's worth from the AA that day.
  22. I've had one snap recently, and my GT6 is still off the road almost a year later. The other one was about 1998 and it was the same scary experience even then!
  23. With an angle grinder???????
  24. I'd find out what the problem is, first. It may not be as serious as a complete replacement engine, although it's good to know how much that'll cost just in case.
  25. I know but that bigger spring is common to quite a few. It's NOT that spring to the left then? How about this one?
