  1. Hello Clive You correct as usual it was me getting mixed up having picked up a timken pair for GT6 etc thinking they would be the same. Its no wonder the TR6 lot worry about front wheel bearings and have failures such a small size and with the lorry engine up front as well? I think things are against me at the moment? I checked prices on line for quality bearings and found club shop to be a good price! Went to order them today and told only 1 pair in stock so I thought not to worry 1 of the pair I have removed do not have a mark on them just a nice run in look(only changing both because cheap and prefer both to be same age) Then!!! while cleaning everything up ready to reassemble I noticed both!!!! track rod end boots had split and they are only 12months old and are NOS UK made? So I have ordered some boots from this man. http://www.balljointboots.co.uk/ Its funny how simple jobs Escelate(Ha Bl****y Ha) Roger ps I wonder what will have fell off or rotted while I have been at lunch?
  2. Hello Clive I know that now after stripping hubs down both Rimmers and Moss list Spitfire as same as TR6 GHB 110 & GHB 111 not GHB 101 & GHB 102 they must know by now they have it wrong? I have 1 car set of Timken's now for TR6 etc but at least the brother in law has a TR6 I will try and convince him they are a good investment! Roger ps the best part is I have been carrying one as a spare in the boot its probably done about 10,000 miles to Spa ,Le Mans and Spain!
  3. Hello All These appear good prices? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141933732613?_trksid=p2060353.m2748.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141933732612?_trksid=p2060353.m2748.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I am going to change mine I already have one set of timken bearings I picked up at a small local show for £5!!! I get brake knock back and pad rattle so hopefully will cure it? Roger
  4. Hello All I anyone is after AAQ needles Rimmers have some ABG which looking a minty lamb are very close and only £1.50 plus vat and p&p = £6 pair Roger
  5. Hello Andy Mine is a late 1500 and they fit into these http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID005827 627318 Not very elegant but thats it Roger
  6. Hello Richard I fitted a dual thermostat switch to my Spitfire one fan cuts in at 83degs and out at 78degs and the other 88degs and out at 83degs.(I think/ will check) I have arranged the wiring to have an overide switch with centre off and on left and right and they are wired 1st fan or both.(2 relays and led's to show when on and individual fuses) I found in Spain last year the second fan never came on on its own only when I got twichy! I run a full width radiator with the sensor in the bottom of the radiator and 2 x 9" fans. Roger
  7. Hello All Just picked up my new propshaft from Proptech hartlebury. It looks good and greaseable, he said the old one was past repairing slack in cv and cups rotating in yokes. He has built it with stronger uj,s? (I hope it fits ok) Roger
  8. Hello All Well its back together!!! The best I could get the crown wheel and pinion mesh was 3 to 6 thou. There is quite a lot of play on the output shaft splines to sun wheels but the rest feels ok? I tried bluing the teeth and it looked ok ish. Well time will tell or I may be looking for a new differential? Roger
  9. Hello Pete Perhaps a shot whisky in my tea? There is no real rush as the club have run out of the rear diff mounting bush and I am having a new prop shaft made at Proptech with a uj at both ends and sliding joint plus he said he will fit stronger uj,s?(should see me out?) Roger
  10. Hello Pete I think I am having a bad day? I am trying to set the pinon preload with shims as was the old method(when I looked and stripped my differential I found it was a Vitesse one but with the 3.63 crown wheel) I have adjusted the shims to get rid of the play and at 90lbs/ft on the nut I get about a 12oz weight on a 12" strip(24" really to balance) before it turns. But according to the workshop manual it should be 13 - 20 in/lbs(Spitfire seal fitted) 12-16in/lbs(vitesse no seal) 15-18in/lbs(TR's all no seal) So according to my reckoning I am only half way there but it feels tight(ish) to me. So do I take another 1-2 thou shim out and make it tighter? Roger
  11. Hello All As part of my differetial rebuild I thought I will replace the pads in the rear spring with teflon ones as recommend on the dutch site but on stripping it down I found the poly Bushes I fitted 6,600 miles and 18 months ago are knackered as can be seen in the photos and the differetial bush is not much better? these were supplied by a well known supplier. So I think I will get some from the club next sunday and rear spring bushes as these do not look to good. Roger I wish we could get good Triumph quality bushes?
  12. Hello Pete That is what my journals measure 1.130" /1.131" I have fitted the moss ones which I feel are correct. Roger
  13. Hello All More news on my seal problem. I still think these are the wrong seals? So I sent for a pair from Moss along with some other parts I wanted. Their seal is a different type in that is is not rubber covered but that makes no difference, but after careful measuring they measure 1.080" i/d were as the kit one measures 1.035" i/d I tried one out of the kit on the shaft and it is very tight to the extent that you can hardly turn it, were as the Moss one feels about right. I have attached a photo so you may be able to see the difference. Roger
  14. Hello All I am in the process of rebuilding my Spitfire differential, I purchased a kit of bearings and seals to do the job. But I have a problem the output shaft seals supplied are 1.062" i/d x 1.625" o/d x 0.375 but were the seal sits on my shafts is 1.125" dia. I contacted the supplier but they say this is what they have always supplied? So are they wrong or do I have some non standard output shafts? Looking on various sites they all list as part no 117952. The number on old ones is MFC SOAO 1300 Roger
  15. Hello Pete That's what I thought and they tell you the torque figure needed in the workshop manual for the turning resistance minus oil seal so that's what I will aim at.(that's what I did on my brother in laws TR6) Never did like the thought of a collapsible spacer! especially it you have to change the nose seal. I have the diff out and on the bench now I may remove it from the casing later and have a look and see if I can measure washers etc. before stripping it down. Roger
  16. Hello Pete I have been thinking about my differential again(sad I know) You can get the sun wheel shims from moss, so could I not fit slightly thicker ones to take up wear in planet wheel shims? Plus why do I have to fit a collapsible spacer? surly this was fitted just to speed up assembly instead of fitting shims to get the pre load on the bearings? I could make one in my lathe to the correct length! Roger
  17. Hello Doug I think I am past my best before and use by date Roger
  18. Hello Doug & John I have put some flanged s/s screws(which I polished) in with some fibre washers under the head, I will find some clear ones or just make some out of plastic sheet. My Mom was 93 she used to say she had passed her sell by date. The steering wheel I bought for £30 at the TR register day to replace the 13" moto lita one and just stripped the old varnish off and stained a bit darker and used the same varnish as used on the dashboard and re polished the spokes. It has made the car nicer to drive and not so heavy when parking etc(triumph knew what they were doing) Roger
  19. Hello All The Dashboard is all back in and working(a bit delayed as my poor mother passed away on 21st December) I am happy with the result but do not want to do it for a living(not that I am going to start again at 70!) I like the rocker switches in place of the pull type(not for the conkers set) Roger ps I may fit a lower output led in the vacuum gauge. and the 4 screws are to be replaced with I don't know what yet.
  20. Hello Pete That's a good thought, I can not be the only one with this problem? Morris minor's and midgets have similar looking washers. Does anyone have some old ones to get the dimensions off? Roger
  21. Hello All I was thinking of overhauling my differential Spitfire 1500 Now I can get the bearings and seals ok but where do you get the planet wheel shims from? All suppliers say NLA. I can not believe there are non left when they made so many units. So how do these firms offer rebuilt units? Perhaps the club could get them remade? Or has one of you clever people made some? After all its just some phosphor bronze sheet pressed into a curve(I think) now where can I get some sheet in different thickness's and make a simple press tool to use on my 8 ton hydraulic press? Roger
  22. Hello Darren I have one of these and find it very good as you can balance the carb,s at tick over and then check that the inter connecting links are set right by doing a 2000rpm ish check on the balance and adjust as needed. http://www.ebay.co.u...c-/252231523420 Roger
  23. Hello All Here is 3 photos of the dash now it is varnished a trial fitting to sort out wiring changes. I have yet to stain and varnish the steering wheel. I am pleased with the result it is not difficult just takes time. I have even fitted a small led to light up the heater controls. Roger
  24. Hello Casper I have read the article in the link and I think I am 70 now so if it lasts 10+years it will do me? Roger
  25. Hello Richard I went by this article and another one I found on the web. http://www.frost.co.uk/how-do-i-re-veneer-my-cars-wood-trim and this one. http://www.crookedspireclassic.co.uk/page14.html Roger
