  1. Hello All This is my modified dashboard I have yet to varnish it. I am going to use this. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151545279628?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT As you can see I have replaced the pull switches with rocker type and moved the light switch. It will not be to everybody's taste but I am pleased with the result. This is the veneer I bought http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kevasingo-Kevazingo-Veneer-REAL-WOOD-Sheet-1200mm-x-440mm-47-x-17-inches-/252143319329? Roger
  2. Hello All We live off grid and have a set of batteries to store the pv and wind energy (1100amp/hours @ 24volts 12 cells and bl**dy heavy) you should smell the hydrogen gas coming off them when charging(they are in a box vented to outside) If any one want's battery water use these people I have just had 10 yes 10 delivered for our batteries and I also use it in the cars(I think MX5's insist on it) http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-accessories/car-maintenance-accessories/car-battery-maintenance/deionised-water/?553771620&0&cc5_146 and delivery is free and 10% off!!!! Roger
  3. Hello Roy A bit of a late reply but this is the 2 9" fans I fitted to our Spitfire1500. The dual sensor switch turns the right hand fan at 83dec C and off at 78deg C and the left hand one at 88deg C and off at 83dec C (looking from the front) I fitted an override switch to turn on one or both. We went to Spain this summer and down at Jerez it was 35/40deg C and only one fan was needed (except when I panicked at first but then left it to control its self) Roger
  4. I also have one lying about some where that I removed as soon as I got the car(free to anyone foolish enough to fit it) no second thoughts I don't want you to ruin your engine even if its in an MG!!!!!!! Roger
  5. Hello Mark I fitted one of these to my brother in laws TR6(US) It has a 3 into 2 into exhaust about 9 to 1comp, K&N s and a ported head And it made 130bhp on the rollers. http://www.chriswitor.com/proddetail.php?prod=CW3021EX Chris Witor said stick to about 9 to 1 comp less chance of pinking and going to 9.5 to 1 only gains about 5bhp I think he said I have now fitted Megajolt ignition and he says it is even better and smoother tick over. Oil pump

Hello All I have to get a new oil pump for the engine I am building but my question is is the later angled one any better than the straight one? I understand the capacities are the same. I am going to fit baffles in the sump so I would have thought a straight one was best? Roger
  7. Hello All I have made start on bushing the rockers(knackered the first one) drilled it out to 11/16"dia but the drill cut over size about 10thou!!!! But I did not like the look of a 11/16"dia? hole (to big and looked to have weakened the rocker)so drilled and REAMED the next one 5/8"dia and it looks much better! I made a bush and reamed it and its tight on the unworn part of the old shaft but a nice fit on an unworn part of a TR6 shaft? So I will get a new shaft before doing any more(one short now unless I strip the existing engine or if some kind person has some old ones going spare to play with?) Still it keeps me off the streets? Just the jig to re profile faces to make now?(and before you ask the answer is no? if I charged 50p an hour you still could not afford me to do yours Sorry) Roger
  8. Hello All I have decided on the Newman PH2 cam(at last) on further looking it has the same lobe angles as all the Triumph ones. What about cam followers? Triumph never listed any different ones from what I can find! and the Newman steel ones seem expensive (£88 + vat a set, £40 +vat chilled iron type) I have run just ordinary ones on the Mk3 prifile for 10,000+ miles and all seems ok? (Thoughts) As to the rocker arms I have been reading reports on the TR register and a fair few people seem to have had trouble with them(poor maching and soft tips) So I am going to have a go at drilling them out and bushing them with Phosphor Bronze(I found a lenght in the workshop) and re profiling them and a new shaft(if they wear it is not to much trouble to change them. I have made a jig to hold them for re drilling and I have a 9/16" reamer(so its just my time and all winter) Roger
  9. Hello John David Newman has said they will grind one with small journals. I think the PH2 profile is the same as the old Triumph V175 or known as B which is a 30/70 70/30 280degs 0.409" lift (0.405" Newman) and running 0.014" clearance (so not to tappety) I run the Mk3 profile at the moment 25/65 65/25 270degs about 0.350 lift All that I have read seems to suggest Triumph,s benefit from more lift (to compensate small valves) So I think I will order a Newman one as I still want a road car that still pulls from say 2000ish RPM but a bit more grunt at 3500+(well that's the theory unless some one tells me different? I have been looking at the rocker gear and the shaft is worn as expected and a couple of rockers have scored bores and all tips are worn(I could re profile these!) but I was thinking of fitting the bushed type as supplied by Rimmers and Moss etc and making solid spacers instead of the springs(they say it helps keep the oil in?) What do people think? Roger ps It get very involved when you start but I only want to do it ONCE!!! Roger
  10. Hello All Just reviving this thread as I am close to deciding on camshaft! after looking at all the reports I can find on line(confusing?) I am coming around to the Newman PH2 profile(if they will grind one on a small bearing shaft) So is any one running this cam? and what is it like? Roger
  11. Hello All Here is mine on the Spanish trip. Roger
  12. Hello I think in a word no. I re foamed mine a few years ago not original covers, it is not to difficult just take your time. You may find you need some new rubber straps, I made up some new ones by buying some webbing off ebay and taking the old ones apart and fitting new webbing. When finished the effort is worth it Roger
  13. Hello JohnD I have taken you advice and made a backing plate to spread the load, I did not have a spare back plate but I did have some 1/4" aluminum plate so I made one. Its so nice to be able to work at a nice height and walk around the engine and turn it over without a hernia forming(had that fixed I don't want another) Not sure would want 1000lbs on it? Still not sure which camshaft to fit? a TR5 profile(35 65 65 35) would be good so I am told but no one seems to do that? Roger

    Loctite

Hello Jezza I was refitting a crown wheel to the carrier in a TR6 differential. Roger
  15. Hello John That looks like a proper lathe as well. Built in the days when we made proper things to last( I think mine will see me out?) When I think of all the things I have made and modified on my lathe. Roger

    Loctite

Hello All I have just used up the last of my thread lock fluid and I was wondering what everyone else uses? The one I had was a 3M product RITE-LOK TL42 I was just looking on fleabay and there is lots of products at various prices! Is it better to buy a small quantity as they have use by dates and which is the best value for money and performance/ I know there are different types for different jobs but which is the best all rounder for our cars? Roger
  17. Hello John No it is a Woodhouse & Mitchell 70 Junior 72 centre lathe 3' 9" between centres with a norton gearbox. It was made in 1952 I even have the inspection sheet and operator's manual. I was made redundant in 1980 and I bought it with part of the redundancy money! it has paid for its self many times over in the last 35 years. She is a bit worn now (like me) but we cope with each other. Here is a link to her statistics. She is built like brick S**thouse. http://www.lathes.co.uk/woodhouse%26mitchell/ Roger
  18. Hello All I have cleaned up my flywheel and it weighs about 0.8lbs lighter! but I know it is true all over. John here is a photo of my lathe set up Roger I had better get on with my brother in laws Differential now? all the bearings arrived today, I got them off ebay after checking they were major brands. The 2 main ones are Timken USA Pinion are SKF Japan Output shaft NTN Japan Seal SKF Rimmers could not tell me the make of bearings and I did not want any budget bearings in the differential
  19. Hello JohnD the lathe I have is a 7" swing with a removeable bed gap so I can get a 19" motorcycle wheel in if I run it on centres to skim the brake drum! I also use it as a milling machine with slide that mounts vertically on the cross slide(a bit slow and clumsy but I can not justify a milling machine but I have come mighty close a couple of times!) I mounted the cylinder head on it to machine the lump out between the valves etc as all the books recommend. I can also screw cut on it but not metric as I am missing a 127 tooth gear that does the conversion(but I don't do much metric work) It is not glamorous it is old(like the operator) It has been in my garage for about 35 years and it was ex toolroom then. I don't know how you all manage without a lathe? I agree you have to measure the volume and it is not difficult just takes time(I aim at 1to 2cc's max closer if possible) This time I will make sure all the pistons are the same height to within a few thou. My therory is if you are going to bother do it to the best of you abilites. Now this really going to upset you I also have a drill press about this size https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cdp301b-drill-press 2 compressors one electric and one petrol driven. One of these.but not from machine mart https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/heavy-duty-blast-cabinet A mig welder(but I am not much good at it) the 185 http://www.weldequip.com/portamig-mig-welders.htm A couple of motorcycle lifts But the thing that has made my life a lot easier is one of these http://www.hamercarlift.com/HAMER-PRODUCT-RANGE And a home made hydraulic press about 8 tons Plus all the usual spanners, grinders, etc. Roger
  20. Hello Gents I am still pondering over this spare engine. My thoughts so far are Crank grind and polish plus tri metal shells for both crank and big ends. Fit camshaft bushes to block and go for a fast road cam (I am favoring the Newman one and tappets.) Crank etc balance. Drill out the center oil way to 5/16" Duplex timing chain set(which I have acquired for £30, both wheels ,chain, seal, tensioner ) Block skim and hone as there is only about 0.001 to 0.002" wear at the top. New set of rings(not sure which ones yet) I looking at the flywheel today the clutch face is ok but there is light rust on other faces so I thought I might make a mandrel and mount it in the lathe and clean up all surfaces. Then I thought do people lighten these at all? it weighs 16.6lbs / 7.5kg at the moment so if it is lightened how much and were?(I don,t wan,t a race engine just one that smooth and pulls well to 5500rpm max) I can set the Megajolt to stop over revving? Sump baffling? Blue print the oil pump (I have the offer of 2 NEW ones for FREE so I can mix and match) I have done this with the one I have now and I peg the end cover to keep it in the best position while the bolts are tightened. Do I need to fit new big end bolts and if so which(remembering it is not a race engine) flywheel bolts? So Gents what are your thoughts? Roger
  21. Hello All I need to purchase a new set of piston rings in standard size, but who do I get them from?(quality) Here are a couple of links I have found(I know Rimmers do them) In the first one they list 3 makes so which is best http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FULL-SET-PISTON-RINGS-FOR-Triumph-HERALD-TOLEDO-SPITFIRE-1966-1981-/161389322093?hash=item25938d9f6d http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221412613196?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141478472971?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
  22. Hello John that's what I thought, I always think of 4.8 as mild steel grade ok for non stressed items. I have ordered some 8.8 I thought the 12.9's were a bit over the top! Roger now if I could just get the output flange off the shaft(my press is starting to bow !!!!) may have to go to a engineering place(that goes against the grain) Its off a bit of heat 8 to 10 tons pressure and a thump? (It da arf go with a BIG bang) very satisfying but then I am easily pleased!
  23. Hello Both Now we on to cake this what I had on Sunday And my present to me arrived today, I am not sure whether to replace the bolts as they are only 4.8's or at least the 4 on the arms and the one at bottom of main upright? What do we think? or am I being over cautious? they are all 12mm But I agree you could not buy the steel for this price yet alone how many hours it would take to make!!
  24. Hello John & Clive I have a set of digital scales I bought for weighing ebay stuff to be postd and drugs(green tea, chocolate biscuits etc) I have an oil cooler fitted with thermostat and I use the 20/60 oil. I have weighed the pistons and rods and they are pretty close. I have all winter to get it done. At the moment I am fighting my brother in laws TR6 differential! I have got one output flange off and left the other under the hydraulic press for the night? just got to make a case spreader now. Do you think I should tell him its my first complete stripping of a differential for years? Roger
