  1. Unless you really know what you are doing, and have all the equipment available, Brake Caliper refurbishment is something that should be trusted to the experts.

Hag, post some photos to show the differences. If the holes are on the top of the head, outside the rocker cover then they are to accommodate different car heater arrangements. With 4 cly heads they changed in the early 70s to remove the hole, when they changed the heater hose arrangement and put a Tee piece on the manifold. Transition heads were fitted with a blanking plug.

Simple answer - Yes, as long as you use the appropriate head so that the compression ratio is correct.
  5. Garth is aware and is working with the software developer to get it fixed.

  8. Profile pictures are a bit of a problem at the moment. A recent security patch to the IPboard software has disabled the uploading of profile pictures, and there is nothing we can do to resolve it until IPboard resolve the problem and install an updated securty patch. It is currenly impacting all IPboard messageboards that are hosted on their central servers. There is a workaround, you can load the picture to somewhere else on the internet, and then call it in via the "Import a photo from a URL" link. Regards, Kevin
  9. Peter, Happy Birthday 70 years young today Enjoy the new slippers with the Velcro pom-poms This thread is open for anyone to add their birthday wishes.
  10. The index is already online. http://forum.tssc.org.uk/index.php?/forum/29-technical-directory-car-model-specs/
  11. Engine plus gearbox are probably in the order of 250Kg. The thing about engine cranes is the amount that they can lift with the arm extended far enough to get at the engine to lift it. I would suggest getting an engine crane that can lift at least 250Kg with the arm fully extended. You'd be surprised by the number of 1 & 2 Ton cranes that have a very low lift capacity when the arm is fully extended.
  12. In a Triumph, the gearbox and overdrive share the same oil. The "correct" oil for a Triumph gearbox is EP90 (GL4) The "correct" manufacturer specified oil for the laycock overdrive is a normal oil. A triumph gearbox will wear out if you use a normal oil. The overdrive wont wear out if you use EP90, but it might be slightly slower to engage. If EP90 was going to cause a problem with the overdrive, the Laycock would not have supplied them for Triumph to use, as the failure rate would have damaged their reputation. My choice is to preserve the gearbox - good replacement parts are getting difficult to source - and live with a slightly slower overdrive engagement.
  13. As Pete says, don't grease polybushes - of any manufacture. It is however OK to "grease" them using a fully synthetic white grease if you need to. Superlube Synthetic Grease is the one to use http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/181862009139?adgroupid=&hlpht=true&hlpv=2&rlsatarget=&adtype=pla&ff3=1&lpid=122&poi=&ul_noapp=true&limghlpsr=true&ff19=0&device=c&chn=ps&campaignid=&crdt=0&ff12=67&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff14=122&viphx=1&ops=true&ff13=80

  16. I lost all respect for Ed China when I saw him use petrol for this test on Wheeler Dealers - stupidly dangerous, and no warnings given, and petrol poured all over his tool box. With all the studio lighting and camera equipment in the workshop I was stunned there wasn't a fire. Any low viscosity liquid will do, and the less volatile the better - white spirit or paraffin would be considerably safer, and still I would do it outside with plenty of ventilation and a tray to catch any spillage or leakage.
  17. The GT6 mk1 has a fly off handbrake. Not sure when it changed to a normal one.
  18. If the engine is a large journal crank then its the large nut - 1 13/16" (which is 46mm, not 42 mm) If the engine is still the original engine in the car, then it will be a small journal crank (FC engine number prefix) then it will have a much smaller nut - I believe that it's 1 5/16".
  19. The camshaft is driven of a chain that is driven by the crankshaft, not the water pump / radiator fan. When you turned the radiator fan, did the crankshaft rotate as well ? If it didn't, then you need to grab the lower pulley and rotate the crank directly to check if the rotor arm rotates. It is not unheard of for the timing chain to fail completely, but it is very rare.
  20. Consider it done - look down the forum listing to find the new Club Events section
  21. The ones on ebay are 4.5J, not 5.5J
  22. Now that the forum has been up and running for almost a year, it is time to add a few new sections. Over the next few days I will be adding some new sections. I've started with this Forum Announcement section, and a Forum Help & Suggestions section. Only the Administrators and Moderators will be able to post in the Announcements section. All members will be able to start threads and post replies in the Forum Help & Suggestions, and I've moved a number of appropriate threads from other sections to the Help & Suggestions section as it is the most appropriate place for them
  23. Pete, The £12 is to rent it, not buy it ! It's the version that Sponmon sells on Ebay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/sponmon/m.html?_ipg=50&_sop=1&_rdc=1 None listed at the moment, but he makes them in batches and lists them. It's very effective, I have one - but make sure you use the thread protector on the end of the driveshaft thread otherwise it gets damaged by the enormous crush force during the pulling operation.
  24. The GEG387 gasket is for blocks with recessed bores, and it has a tab on the end. Gaskets for NON recessed bores have no tab. I suspect that your engine may have NON recessed bores - its an early GT6MK3 block, and I believe that the change over point was KE10001HE You should have noticed if there were slight recesses around the top of the bores when the head was off.
