  1. The diff filler bolt is on the left hand side of the diff, about half way up the caseing. It should have a square head, and may be rather tight. Best removed using an 8 point socket.
  2. The parts in question should limit how far up the windows will go, and are specifically designed to "kick" the windows in when they get near the top of the runners. You will need to remove the door panels to see them, and they should be visible in the vertical channels with the windows up or down. It's also possible that they are very badly worn. The other part that can be worn or missing is 613326, but they stop the window from wobbling around in the channel, rather than not kicking in when they reach the top. If either is missing, then they can only be obtained 2nd hand, usually as part of a window lifter channel - assuming the seller of the channels has not removed them - rocking horse poo comes to mind.

    The MoT test for cars has provisions for cars of all ages, and any tester that knows what they are doing should be able to apply the rules that are applicable for the age of the car. The problem comes when the tester has never (or has rarely) seen an older car that is either exempt from certain test items, or is tested to different limits to those applied to a "modern". My preference is to use a classic friendly garage, or if I cant find one, find a garage where the tester is in his 50's as he is likely to have been testing cars for long enough to know how to apply the rules to a classic.
  4. Sounds like a suction tube problem to me. Could the sump be full of sludge that blocks it when cold ?
  5. The window lifter should have some fittings on either end (619509) that react with the "jink" in at the top of each window wide channel to force the window towards the car as it reaches the top. If the doors have been rebuilt, these parts may be missing.
  6. GL5 will be fine for trunions, just don't use it in the diff, or overdrive gearbox. It's only when GL5 spec oil gets very hot and put under a lot of shear forces between hyboid gears in the diff that the high sulphur components that do the damage get activated and damages yellow metals.
  7. Dave, I'm still waiting for someone to enlighten me as to the subjects that are so unique to a model that they need their own section. What ever model of Triumph you have, it has brakes, so most of the stuff in the section about brakes is relevant to your cars. Likewise, if your cars are "small chassis" cars then all the stuff in the suspension and steering section is relevant. Would you split things GT6/Spitfire and Herald/Vitesse because of the outward similarities, or would you split things GT6/Vitesse and Herald/Spitfire because of the engine and running gear similarities - If you look at the factory workshop manual for a Vitesse, you will notice that it also covers the GT6. The TR site has separate sections because there are so many differences between the main models that the club caters for, but I suspect if the TR site was setup all over again then the section grouping would be different. By having the sections we have, you benefit by having a much bigger group of people to discuss the topics concerning your cars because the same topics come up time and time again on all the models of Triumphs.

  10. Some people have commented that the drive can be a little harsh when using a CV conversion - irrespective of who designed or manufactured it. With the rotoflex, the donut puts a little bit of shock absorbtion into the drive shafts, and with the CV joint systems that is (obviously) missing.

Richard, It could be the release bearing just touching the fingers on the clutch diaphragm spring, but I would suspect that it is more likely to be the bearings in the gearbox you can hear - input shaft and lay shaft. When the box is in neutral, the input shaft and layshaft are still driven by the engine, and selecting a gear connects the main shaft into the driveline. Putting your foot on the clutch disconnects the drive into the gearbox, thus the noise stops.

Any behind the scenes global changes have to be made by the Forum Admin (Simon Morgan) its not something the moderators can do.

  16. John, You may still find that the engine is fitted with a Spitfire / Herald flywheel rather than a Dolomite 1500 one. If I remember correctly, when converting an engine from Dolomite to fit a Spitfire, it is necessary to fit a Spitfire / Herald sump in place of the Dolomite one, so if the engine you have has previously been converted for a Spitfire / Herald, then the flywheel may also have been swapped at the same time.

Are people really so blind to the similarities and parts interchangeability between Triumph models that they have to have separate model areas so they don't get confused between an answer that applies to a Spitfire rather than their Herald ? Please tell me the differences between a Vitesse/Herald/Spitfire/GT6 that genuinely warrant having their own sections to each be littered with identical questions about identical problems. 95% of the car is effectively identical, and the same answers apply to each model, hence the forum groupings per "technology" area rather than model area. So for "Model Specific" areas, how about "Small Chassis" i.e. Vitesse/Herald/Spitfire/GT6 "Small Saloon" "Large Saloon/Estate" "Stag" "TR2/3" "TR4/5/6" "TR7/8" Even then there is a massive cross over between models.

  21. The calliper type should be embossed into the casting of the calliper. Alternatively, are the callipers bolted to a mounting plate that is bolted to the upright, or are the callipers bolted directly to the upright ? The early conversions, and cars that left the factory with type 12 callipers used the mounting plate, like the Vitesse / GT6 does, and the later cars used an upright with integrated mountings and type 14 callipers - like the Spitfire. Given that it is a 1968 car, it's probably type 14 callipers, but best to check first.
