AlanT
Nope. Someone has drilled at some point. Probably to cure a stripped thread. By adding a washer it’s all good.
johny
Right can see it now looking at the sectional drawing in the manual. And yes front to rear casings bolts do appear tight on length and possibly could reach the bearing without their spring washer....

AlanT
They deffo reach without the washer! Couldn’t get the new bearing in until I’d added the missing washer.
AlanT
Here’s what happened. Longer bolts where should be shorter plus no washer. I suppose the plus is that it means the diff had been serviced at some point, albeit badly!
johny
The manual says 5/16 UNF x 1" set screws so has someone put in something longer!

It was about 1mm into the bearing so pressing the outer race. Amazing it went at all. Only realised because the new bearings wouldn’t push in.
johny
Its amazing how these things happen as you would think, take the bolts out and put em back in, but no sometimes theres an attack of the morons☹️
AlanT
At least it wasn’t my error!
Peter Truman
Nearly been caught with that on rebuilding a couple of diffs, WHY didn't Triumph put the bolts off centre a little!!!

Given they’d replaced the rear wings and just left 2 inch gaps where the rear inner wings / arches should have been I don’t thing they were experts…
Pete Lewis
gorilla's dont notice a cock up we have all seen a lot over the years there's DIY and diy both quite different unfortunately we can all make mistakes but sometimes a real bloomer appears on the drive Pete
Bordfunker
Need to go and check I didn’t do that when I reassembled my diff! I’m doubting myself now. Karl
Colin Lindsay
I moved my Herald today. I wonder where it can be leaking from?
Peter Truman
A. its dark presumably old oil & B. there a distance apart could it be diff half shafts. Most other leaks would drain to lowest part and be on the centre line wouldn't they?
AlanT
That looks familiar @Colin LindsayHope you’ve got a lift…horrible place to work whilst on axle stands. I’ve got sciatica for my efforts.

Colin Lindsay
1 minute ago, Pete Lewis said: only the shafts not the whole Diff Pete Going to replace the rear spring with a better item; I cleaned, painted and rebushed an old spring but reckon it's worn. I have better versions so will replace. I suspect the diff is leaking from the side plates, which are distorted, rather than round the seals which I replaced a few months back. A bit of sealer or a gasket might help.
AlanT
Finally drove it this morning. Transformational lowering of differential noise! Annoyingly, I can still hear a clicking UJ. One yoke is almost impossible to get the cap into (no trapped needles) and, I suspect, out of kilter. Will swap in another driveshaft. Thanks for all your help everyone. A great outcome.
