Pdv
Have fitted an alternator to my 13/60 with a 1500 engine today, however. The engine is from a MG Midget and the prefix shows that Triumph fitted them to 1500 rear wheel drive cars. The kit was purchased from Paddocks suitable for a Spitfire a fan belt came with the kit but does not fit, to small. Does anyone know what size is required please. johny
Surprised a 1500 didnt already have an alternator! Anyway to ensure getting the correct belt the best way is measure the length required with the pulley in the right position using a piece of non stretchy cord... Pdv
It should have come with one but?. Simple solution, thanks. Steve
DanMi
if you bought a kit to convert to an alternator it would be for the earlier engine with a small crank pulley and smaller water pump pulley as the 1500 always had an alternator and all the spits that had a dynamo had the small crank. You would need the standard belt for a 1500
Clive
10 hours ago, Pdv said: It should have come with one but?. Simple solution, thanks. Steve Not quite as simple as you think. It needs to be the same sort of thickness as the fan belt. Thin string will sit at the bottom of the pully V's and you will buy too short a belt. Std 1500 belt is 1088mm, which should fit, but no guarantees!
johny
Dont forget you have got position adjustment on the alternator so not critical to get the measurement millimeter perfect - just do the measurement in the middle of its range and as theres a vast number of belt lengths available there wont be a problem👍
Colin Lindsay
And remember to have just a little bit of slack in whichever belt you buy, otherwise too much sideways pressure from an overly tight belt will wreck the bearings and wear components out more quickly. Pdv
Thanks to you all. I have two many things on the go at the moment, and a bit of brain fade I think. I keep forgetting, even if the engine was from a MG Midget it was the same as fitted to Triumph 1500 rear wheel drives, so as Clive says 1500 should fit. Thanks for the measurement Clive. Hello All I have used them often they are good and quick Roger ps but I always look on Fleabay for new old stock bearings of the Good makes and just regrease them with fresh grease after a wash out and you can pop the rubber type seals out easy and pop them back in if need or leave them out if needed! Pdv
Looked at Paddocks and they have one for the 1500 that has a part number ending in 1088 so looks to be sorted. Steve
