Heaved successfully! All now back in one piece. Next question is simpler: The new track rod gaiter has a diameter of about half that of the dome nut which it has to fit over. Is there any recommended way to expand the hole to get it to fit over the dome nut?

Lots of grease, effort and swearing. You can pre-stretch it with fingers but unless you have one of the tools Pete used to use it is a real faff. Keeping inward pressure on the outer end, so it can't fly off / backwards all the time helps, but you need a lot of patience and just work it over bit by bit being careful not to tear it.

I spend well over an hour last one I did, probably closer to two, and 'Er Indoors came out, looked at it, and did it in less than a minute. I'll send her over.

Im sure most gaitors sold are a generic one size fits nothing, I have some ( girls on the electrical bench called them fanny stretchers)

used them for years open up tight grommets and gaitors

For steering rack gaitors it's "Apply enough grease so it will slip over everything...but end up everywhere so you can no longer get any grip on the gaitor to slide it anywhere.".

Also do up your cable ties VERY tightly and if possible don't move the steering rack for a few days after getting them on...or they prefer to slip back off rather than 'bellowsing'.  This is...frustrating.
