Missing / losing power

..... I'd go back to basics just in case it is not fuel related.

Compression test (if you have the kit)

Check rockers

Check timing

Set mixture and balance carbs.

For the sake of a few quid I'd fit new plugs / points / air filter and have a really good look at the HT leads and dizzy cap and probably replace anyway.

Do check the jets return to the adjusting nut when the choke cable is pushed back after use.

the wax stat jets have a wide base the size of a penny on the bottom, std jet is just a red angle and the flex tube

spark plugs ,, life and  soul of the engine , dont use any with an R in the suffix ,have found these can cause lots of misfires. On our old simple HT sytems

Taking fuel pump off did not go exactly well, pipe input back on for now until I stem flow of fuel - basics I know however got to learn somewhere.

Not attempting leads and plugs first so have been ordered.

Thanks and will keep up with the updates.

if theres a hose to connect a drill shank inserted makes a easy bung,  a bolt wont work unless its got a plain shank  and they dont like being pressed in,

then any rubber hose distubed will likely cut off a sliver of rubber and this then floats about till it blocks the float valve

the joys of classics

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been having problems with petrol when driving the petrol filter seems to have bubbles in it and some brown sediment. This is causing the car to lose power. It is a vitesse two litre. I have recently taken the tank out and ringed it out to get any rust out.

Is there a specialist I can take it to near Deptford London or call out service to help me out as I am completely useless?

Regards Mark.

if you took the tank out youre doing OK , not the easiest task on a vitesse

bubbles dont matter too much , air in the filter is quite normal,, a string of continous bubbles is a air leak in the suction pipe

or pump diaphragm ,  check the pipe to hose connection in the boot these go hard and whilst clip seems tight the hose is a loose fit on the tank/resevre  outlet pipe.

did you blow the supply tube through ???

filters can hold a lot of debris before blocking but replacement if aged is worth doing.

check the inside of the pump is nor clocgged with debris, take its top off .

you could have particles jammed in the back of the float needle valve in the carb.

the power problem may be nothing to do with fuel supply .

is luton too far to trundle to when the suns out

Sorry to jump on this thread but my Vitesse has begun to idle quite lumpy but is great on Acceleration. Once I get to'a cruise around 50+ all is well but around 40 it's hesitant and lumpy, pull the choke out a little and it's great. Could this be a possible air leak?

Car has SU6 with waxstat jet

Thanks in advance

SU HS6? as in 1 3/4"??

Do you know what needles have been fitted? Notoriously difficulty to guess the correct needle and a rolling road is the usual way to get it sorted.

I see you have a 2.5, in which case a dolly sprint needle will be reasonably close, again depends what air filters are in use.

Hello Clive, i've pulled them apart for a clean, the needles are BDG spring loaded bias types.  Interesting as the normal needles for this carb is BDB.  Looking at the plugs there white so looks like its definatley running lean.  Was fine after a 260 mile trip but seems to have untuned itself

Ill see how she runs tonight after work.

regards

Rich
