Darren Groves
I fitted my new fuel tank today in to my MKIV Spitfire, is it a known thing that the filler necks are too long? Pic 1 shows the lowest the filler cap will sit when touching the top of the tanks filler neck, pic 2 shows the height....I could just shorten the tanks neck, but thought I'd ask the question in case I'm missing something obvious. Unfortunately I don't have the old tank to compare.
Colin Lindsay
And you're touching metal to metal? I'd guess the tank is designed for owner adaptation, to suit their particular car. You can trim it off, but it's not so easy to add on, hence it's overlong when supplied.
Darren Groves
Yep, touching. I could lower the tank a few mm if I really tried, but not enough. OK, will trim off the filler neck, just thought they might be supplied to the correct application.....

KevinR
Be Careful when cutting it short to ovoid getting dwarf in the tank.
Peter Truman
Just a hint I use an old Jubilee clamp tightened up on the pipe to ensure I get a square & straight cut. Doing it that way I can even use an electric recirc saw & still get a straight cut. Peter T

That would explain the strange noises from the back and the fuel gauge jumping about. db
