    What exactly do they do? Other than to kamikaze onto car headlights? They seem to have evolved over millions of years to camouflage themselves against trees etc then they go and stick themselves onto bright red paint.

    In which case, it's not an earth then... don't connect it to anything else until you know where it comes from - it may be a home-made power source for spots or the like. Can you test it (use a bulb or meter) to see if it really does power up when the ignition comes on?

    Possibly - possibly - to the bolt that secures the horn bracket to the inner panel behind the nose. I have a ring connector on each side to this point to earth the horns, but I know I've added one myself and whilst the other was there originally it might just be my car only. However, connecting it to any good earth point that it reaches won't do any harm.

    One of the reasons why my Herald restoration has stalled. I want the bodyworker to replace some of the floorpans which will mean less old underseal to clean off the remaining bits, Lockdown has delayed it yet again... but it's still a nightmare job with no ending.

    I fantasise about having one of those LED signs in the rear window where I can display messages like: "What part of 'STOP' did you not understand?", "Do you want me to open my boot so you can come closer?" and "Who broke your dip switch?"

    I had actually wondered about that, but can't work out which bits would need to be lifted / prised about so much that you need a special tool for it.

    Yep... that's a pass... Actually if you need any the seals are available new, all you need to know is the diameter.

    You can pull it gently outwards and it will rotate sideways once clear of the sides so that you can release it and it will stay wedged outside the groove, enabling you to clean it and in behind it. I cleaned mine recently with WD40 and it really did free up. I didn't fully remove it just in case.

    Agreed; if we can work out why they were changed, and how the mechanism changed, if at all, then we can work out a source or an alternative.

    Ah.. I read Rob's post incorrectly; I thought he meant one edge as in only one was the wrong size, but it's one edge / side of each pad ie the backing. Got it now. Still not good, tho, if they're being sold as suitable for our cars.

    So the caliper is not assymetric, and one pad needs to be smaller than the other?

    Try page 125 and see what it lists under 'Private lock assembly?' Part 116 on that plate.

    Interesting! Totally different to mine (Stanpart Spare Parts Catalogue) which lists the early lock to Commission number KC4799 only, a left and right version with two different part numbers. KC4800 onwards had 621773 which seems to fit both sides. That one lists 810292 and 810291 for the two doors up until KC9999.

    So you require parts 618282 and 618283. Do you have any at all, so that you can take a good photograph? It will help with the search. I need to see how they differ from later models.

    It hangs side-on to the exhaust and most of the attachment points along the length of the car - diff engine or gearbox - are straight-on, and so it wouldn't fit to the exhaust without a right-angled twist. There's no lower hole to clamp any other side to, to make a complete clamp, and in any case I've never seen any other part that clamps to it. It fits the profile of the Herald pipe but with nothing to clamp it, it surely must make a rattle as the car drives? Here's the other one in better condition:

    I always took it as meaning 'joined' as in a small group or clique. Junta / Jointa...
