Howdy Ian yep looks just as bad lol ๐คฃ it is tricky, Ive just made up 3 panels that make up the outside two next to window and the connecting underneath post to rear wing which you dont see till youve cut out the outer sections, thats all just been welded in place after painting underneath. Ive just made the inside B post to window piece with a small addition it will be welded in soon as paints dried, then to that front bit youve made, Ill be happy then, probably the trickiest bit to do on these ๐๐ป๐

Door skinned and ready to fit after some nasty repairs. The bloke that restored this 30 years ago was good with lead loading, it hid all the rot nicely ๐คฃ๐คฃ its thick with lead above the catch plate, all will be cut out once Ive repaired the other side Happy Sunday everyone ๐๐๐ป

Repaired and fabricated the door bottom and front corner ready to trial fit the skin, coming together slowly

Next.......door frame is a lot better than drivers side. Just ordered all panels and sills from Chic Doig for the onslaught ๐คฃ๐๐๐ป
-
Reskin the door then work everything to that, Chic Doig advised this too, Ive done my offside on my GT6, sills everything its good advice.
-
I was starting to replace my offside sill etc, when I bought them I mentioned to Chic Doig I was then going to fix up my door bottom and reskin it. His advice was to do the door first then build the car round it, lots of time and swearing spent lol it looks good, the rear gap I had to slit and weld all the way down to get a nice uniform gap as the rear wings had been changed before I got the car. Sometimes thats the only way. Just going to start the nearside in the next few weeks

Finally got the rear floor and corners and lower valance all fitted and welded up, great finish to the day ๐ Just got to trim excess steel to finish.
-
Just tacked the rear lower on, looks good but too hot to weld today forget it lol ๐

Brooky replied to Luke Remon's topic in My Triumph Restoration Project
They look like hiding rust area at the sill joint at rear section, might be worth taking it off to see what its like under there but generally it looks in good condition to me ๐๐ป floor looks great- 14 replies

Sounds like someone did it not used to mig welding, it can be tricky on thin stuff, I think people try to go for the look of a weld which is good on new steel as it will look good, older steel mated to new stuff will still look good as long as its been cleaned up properly first. The key is penetration having enough power and feed wire, I do short bursts like a machine gun, gauging when its ready to blow through as the steel is getting too hot so stop for a few seconds and carry on. On outer panels same thing but use a wet towel to keep it cool. Theres always dodgy stuff done to cars lol

20 quid an hour is cheap these days. Wow youve been on with this build since the 90s? The midget I had started to restore mid 90s had new front end rails and inner mudguards costing 700 all in, this was done at FM sportscars in Warrington, I couldn't do stuff like mig welding then and had my own lab there too was so busy. Not had any experience with any triumphs upto now with my gt6 so dont know anything about heralds apart from knowing they come apart like yours. Would it not be better to line everything up then paint it? Nice colour ๐

Lower part of rear wing repaired and clamped in place to act as template to make the lower section of inner arch, had enough for one day though now ๐ฅด๐คฃ
-
Cleaned up nicely, took the best part of yesterday to weld the arch up, no distortion just needs a skim to prep and paint happy days ๐๐ป Can get back to the lower rear outer now.
-
Well a very tricky past few days, I was starting to fabricate the outer rear part of the lower inner arch to put the lower wing back. Looking at the inner arch, I thought thats strange, the outer part of inner arch had a rust line and weld to it but looking at the same section through the petrol hole it looked mint hmmm so I disc cut the whole of outer arch off, then cut the outer section of inner off, whoever restored this car, no words lol theyd cut the outer part of old inner arch off then used a repair arch overlapping by nearly 100mm with no extra protection, riveted to hold in position and tack welded all round and then welded the new rear wing on and used sealant on the inner edge so when running your fingers round it would feel smooth. I could understand doing that if it was someone just trying to keep it on the road but this was a full restoration I have invoices and pictures for with new rear wings, however no pics of this ns being done now I know why. Unbelievable. Anyway its all sorted now fully seem welded up after cutting to butt weld together and refitted the outer arch, just need to finish trimming up the welds. Amazing what you find ๐ฎ

Graham Teeth pay ok, its the dentist that makes the money and takes all the credit lol Its my hobby and dont mind spending to make life easier and some things look more professional spot welded, bought on a vat free day too so got the better model for the cheaper price ๐ Depending how work goes I might do some repair work for people but limited on space here lol
-
Hi Paul yes I got mine on a vat free day too, certainly speeds things up on outside joints like mini sills and GT6 sills and panels. I also bought long arms for it as I used to make little toolboxes for Lambrettas, only sold enough to cover the cost of a guillotene and bender but they really come in handy for my car resto work. Cheers Iain.

The near side rear coming on now and lower light panel end repair of lower lip cut out and repaired, this has trimmed up nicely and actually looks like a pressed panel again, forgot to take a pic but will later
