    tappets

A nice even drip is perfick. The only other way to calm the worry is to take the rocker assembly off and pull the arms along the shaft to see any wear or strip it down completely. Iain

Try running the engine with the rocker cover off, can you see oil dripping from all rocker arms? Iain
  3. I have two rad caps, one seals the other doesn't it's a lottery! Try fitting a second seal from an old cap on the radiator at the bottom of the filler neck. This seal should maintain pressure and my super shiny stainless steel cap didn't! Iain
  4. I assume needle heights are at the same in both carbs? Fixing this would necessitate uneven jet depths. I set both jet depth and needle height with a micrometer. Have you synchronised both carbs? Iain
  5. I've booked tickets for both days. It's one of the great events of the year, marvellous machines and the car park has some of the rarest cars about! We stay in a hotel at Cheltenham on the 6th and walk to town centre for a meal and several drinks🍻🍷🥃. I'm praying to Ra the sun god for good weather...... Anyone else going? Iain
  6. I never thought I would say this even 10 years ago but isn't Amazon wonderful....next day delivery! Best of luck Colin. Iain
  7. One issue with having the earth spade on the side is the wires either dangle down or in my case don't fit as it hits the dash panel. I've fitted it so the switch works horizontally. However I will be changing for a similar switch with the three spades at the back as having all the connections facing forwards makes the cables tidier. Iain
  8. Quite bright, pleasantly surprised.
  9. Snap! Can I also get an audible "turn the bl***y fan off you idiot" message! Thanks for that Johny, plenty of earth possibilities around the dash. Iain
  10. I've bought some toggle switches with an led light on the switch. They have three spades, I have two wires! To enable the led light to work do I need to piggy back off one of the spades! The two spades at the bottom are on/off (checked with avo).
  11. I thought they are all 1/8th NPT my tee piece is. Iain
  12. A very good analysis! Now toss a coin and choose...... Iain
  13. On looking at your top photo the pedestal does need reducing. This assumes the valve is half way up or down. But the arm to valve stem contact looks outboard, solved by increasing the pedestal height. It may be an illusion but try a contact wipe test on inlet and exhaust valves using your adjustable pushrod before doing anything else. I used black permanent marker pen but if you have some engineers blue that is ideal. Iain
  14. I agree the pushrods are last in line to make it all work. At 50% lift there should be a horizontal line from the centre of the rocker arm shaft to the valve stem top. If the angle of arc is too low or high it will effect the valve lift. It's just basic(ish) geometry. I cheated and got one of the CAD guys at my old factory to model it! Since retiring I've deleted all my CAD software. However as previously said check the rocker arm to valve stem wipe. Iain
  15. Good point I would check the rocker arm wipe on the valve stem top. If it's central leave it alone. I would rather have a central push on the valve than better geometry and off centre arm wipe. Off centre and it promotes valve guide wear. With your high lift cam and head skim you will still probably have to use shorter pushrods. Iain
  16. I've taken another look at the pedestals and think 1-1.5mm could be machined off. For me that's 2-2.5mm as I have a good 1mm shim. What difference that would make to the force required I don't know but with a high lift cam and high revs it may be significant. I'll probably not take my engine over 5000rpm so advantage over cost says stay as is. But then I do like to fiddle.......! Let us know what you decide. Iain
  17. Thanks for the info, with a skimmed head I have to use pedestal shims to accommodate standard length pushrod. Note I also have a mild 260 thou cam. This makes the geometry worse but like you unless I machine the pedestals and use shorter pushrods I have no option.
  18. When I had to set different front to rear carb jet heights it was due to wear. Air was ingressing on the front carb making a leaner mixture. I had them refurbed at carburettor exchange and they are now set the same and the plugs are the same colour. However it could be a simple gasket change could solve the imbalance. Iain
  19. Where did you buy them? Do you have more info. It does need a fair bit off the pedestals to correct most of the arm geometry. I'm taking my rocker cover off today to take to the painters tomorrow so I'll take another look at the pedestals. Like Clive I am inclined to get the pedestals machined, the only thing stopping me was sorting out the pushrods. Iain
  20. Kai, welcome to my world of rocker arm geometry vs Triumph! I replaced my rocker assembly with bushed and reamed arms and new shaft etc and found the same out of ideal spec geometry. I also had 40 thou machined off the head. My tappet screws hit the new Ali rocker cover! I have a posting about it in Engine topic. Like you the only way I can think to achieve the correct geometry is to machine the pedestals and fit bespoke length push rods. I haven't done this as I chickened out and opted to chrome paint my steel rocker cover. I can't see why 1-2mm could be machined off the pedestals which would make the geometry much better. FYI and any geometry calcs I think the ratio from push rod to tappet is 1:1.4. I would be interested how you made your bespoke push rods! Iain
  21. While on a cruise last week we got talking to a lovely elderly couple and it turned out not only did we have the same surname but his son in law owns Classic Oils Ltd. Small world isn't it! Iain
  22. True I change to recirculate auto when in a tunnel then forget to reset it.....
  23. I never turn my climate control off. I've had climate control on cars for over 25 years and can't see the point of not using it. My wife's dad doesn't turn his a/c on and still has to wipe the moisture off his windscreen! Barmy! In my view the best invention to make modern driving less onerous. I would choose it over power steering! Iain
  24. I've taken cars to rolling roads and tuned by 'mature experienced' mechanics who have made a right cock up. Getting the basics right is relatively easy, to get the best out of your modified engine is where the black art of trade off comes into play or alternatively spend hours and many pounds trying different permutations. But then we all love a challenge! I do agree your ears and spark plugs will tell you if all is about right. Iain
