I did use a narrow hose close to the Exhaust manifold sealing areas and my ear. It appeared to identify, even some very small leaks.

Hi. Would these be basically suitable to convert a Vitesse, from Dynamo to Alternator?.
Dave
-
Thanks Jeff. All the books I have read, say the direct/bridge wire test should show 16v at idle. Three Dynamos I have (one a recon) show around 5.
All 3 have got up to around 17 at around 1500 rpm. All have the ignition light going out at above idle.
No/not enough charge going to battery for a few years now (new battery etc).
So hoping, not a dynamo problem and if not, will look at control box/wiring etc

Oh, forgot to say, it is working fantastically well! Pushing out 16+ on occasion
Hi Jeff. Glad your getting sorted.
Very interested in this. Is this a voltage test and result, taken from a bridge wire between the two dynamo terminals at idle speed. If not, any idea what rpm (about) to get the 16 and the higher figure, from the new dynamo.
Cheers, Dave

many fit a prop with a telescopic slide but that only takes up variances in assembly tolerances
and they also tend to wear as they dont ever slide
Is the no sliding from lack of lube?

Would not removing The ARB and seeing how the car sat give an idea?. just a thought

Well done and thanks for the heads up on EP. It's about time my water will maybe give up?, was on the car when I bought it about 8 years ago.

Hi. Anyone tried this product, or have any thoughts on it.

Cheers Pete. I had overdrive issues about 7 years ago. Replaced all the solonoid O rings and also the pressure relief valve O rings (very fiddly job) and put a new filter in it.
Mike Papworth rebuilt G.B a short time after that and replaced the two O rings, just inside the O.D unit, when it's seperated from the G.B.
I hoped all these O rings would still be okay, as car used regularly?.
So. I thought to replace the relay first, as easy, then solonoid, then pressure relief valve (as maybe sticks, holding pressure?) and also the filter at the same time (though oil still clean and not much fine swarf on the magnetic filler plug.
Does that sound an ok plan.
Cheers, Dave

Hi. This one has a relay fitted. Can this stay with an open circuit, even when receiving no current.
Just looking at any possible "simples" firstly.
Thanks, Dave

Hi Paul. Just a thought, though you probably have it inhand. My layshaft was a bit shot, and had also mullered the corresponding internal laygear bearing surface (unless it had been rebuilt at sometime, with dodgy laygear and mullered a new layshaft?).
Mike Papworth managed to re sleeve the laygear, (which I guess is better, as the pinions have worn with the other pinions) though he did have spares at the time, about 7 years ago.

You missed a damaged/ missplaced rocker cover gasket
Hi. Have wondered about this and interested, as some cars, have the rocker cover breather open with just a hose/or a hose into the filter box, like mine was.
Since fitting the original diaphragm arrangement the car seems to have more consistent mixture from idle to higher revs. Also the rocker area now has vacuum, where before it used to puff a bit of oil smoke out of the filler hole, if the cap was removed.

Thanks for the stud info. I didn't remember the top 2 holes were threaded, from when I had it out, about 7 years ago.

For replacing a pair of 5/16 2-2 1/2" (or thereabouts) long bolts with the heads cut off, and fitted either side at the top of the block
Do they thread in, or just a push fit Clive?.

Must admit some sort of sealing as suggested might be a bit less brutal than Triumphs method...
Blue hylamer or Stag Wellseal?, (if you already have some?)

Thanks. The box was rebuilt by Mike Papworth some years ago and is apparently a bitza, incorperating a J Type O.D.
I seem to remember a rubber seal? was fitted in the B.H, when I refited G.B.
I did top up G.B recently, so will check if overfilled, or has lost much.
Cheers Dave

Well there is a drip of EP coming from the drain hole and also, from the mating joint of engine plate/bell housing at the bottom area. Did clean all the areas around there a few days ago and still clean, so assuming it's leaking from inside.
Went for a long run on a very hot day. It leaked a bit after this as hot, thin oil, though slows to a tiny drip overnight since.
Can't feel any gap with thin feeler between G.B/B.H, so thinking nothing drastic at the moment.
Won't be able to remove box for a while and need to still use car, so hoping that's ok?. Will monitor oil leak.
Thanks a lot, for all your imput.

When I bought my GT6 I discovered the oil was turning to jelly within a month
I guess that's an exaggeration Doug?, though did all that fine, though plenty of, metal wear make it loads thicker?

this is the rack damper and it keeps the rack in mesh with the pinion its a easy fix take out too much and itgoes very stiff
Hi. Interested in this, as usually, removing shims, makes things looser/more play?.

Are those plug colours suggesting too weak?. After a cruise at around 3000 rpm for a good few miles (doesn't feel like it's running weak) and a plug chop, mine are a pale grey.
I have heard that modern fuels give the grey colour, rather than brown?, though my plugs do give a darker/browner colour when at lower revs and also more stop and starts.

I would first check the end float by trying to move the crank pulley forward and back, more than a couple of thou would indicate a worn engine
I gathered, that there was a always few thou of play intended, maybe around 4thou?.
Also, a view that the outer limit of play specified, can be exceeded to some point?, with no harm to piston alignment, or risk of thrusts dropping out, as long as this play is monitored, so doesn't get excessive?.
Interested in this, if anyone has any thoughts?.

Ahh. Maybe, with my low charging issue, it's why I've only had to replace one bulb in 8 years (brake light)?.
