I gather they weren't ' synchronised ' and it was lethal to drive and not a joke. Yes in the film it was ' surprisingly. I believe Citroen actually sold a double engined 4x4 version of the 2CV called the Sahara for a while in the late 50's/early 60's.

Citröen took it up after a Norman engineer made one. They were really meant to be used in specialised areas by specialised people, i.e. not for general public use. They weren't very practical - 2 petrol tanks meant not much room in the back, engine in boot as well as the standard one up front, so no boot space. Plus as said, probably more than once 'double the engine double the problems' that would have been less polite in the original French use. Of course the car had a massive power output as a result of the work a mind blowing 26hp - no I haven't missed a zero out. When one does come up for sale a potential buyer has to have deep pockets as a couple of hundred thousand of our Euros will be needed to pay for it. Stratton Jimmer
I seem to recall a drag race meeting at Blackbush back in the mid 70s where there was a mini clubman estate with a Jaguar 4.2 engine mounted behind the driver which drove the rather large back wheels. The original engine was still in the front.

cliff.b
I had forgotten that John Cooper had built the "Twini" and had a nasty accident in it. https://www.classicandsportscar.com/news/csc-features/mini-twini-twin-engined-four-wheel-drive-concept-tested-in-full
JohnD
There was a twin engined Mini at Golspie a few years ago. Its solution to the perennial problem of synchronising gear changes was PNEUMATIC! Edited February 9 by JohnD
GrahamB
I read that back in the 1970s, someone built a twin Mini engined special for Autocross. To overcome the gear change issues, the front gearbox was manual and the rear was an automatic. I do not know how well it performed.

The owner drove it through the pits using the mini engine and if I recall correctly, it suffered severe damage to the mini transmission when he ran it down the strip. I was there with some friends from MDRA bike section running several of our machines.
